Type 2
I wonder if anyone can offer an answer:

I have been diagnosed with type 2 now for around 18 months and all is going well except for this one thing, which any suggestions on welcomed:

On a couple of occasions I have, without thinking, had a white bread roll whilst eating soup in a restaurant. Shortly after eating the roll, I began to feel what I describe as being drunk. Usually I only eat brown or whole meal bread.

Can anyone offer any thoughts on why this happened and was the feeling I got due to high sugar level for some reason?

Hi simples, welcome to the forum 🙂 Yes, I would say there is a high possibility that the bread was the culprit. White bread is actually worse for you than table sugar, as it will hit your blood glucose levels faster. Avoid at all costs! 😱 That also goes for all white flour products. If you're not aware of it, I would recommend having a look at the GL diet (Glycaemic Load), which will give you a good idea of what foods are generally OK to eat and what you should avoid - The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction 🙂

May also be worth considering the soup, have you tested after having some, I find, depending on the soup, it can affect my BG quite dramatically which I am assuming is down to both the liquification of the contents and the fact that a lot of soups use potato to thicken which I can't take. Also with soups in restaurants you can never be too sure what else is in there (there's no can to read the ingredients) so i tend to avoid them completely

I have terrible trouble with white bread, it's the only thing that makes me crack double figures blood sugar wise. Other things made with white flour don't have the same impact for some reason. I have discovered that in an emergency (in a restaurant) if I add butter it doesn't have the same impact (I'm guessing that's the fat slowing it down slightly). I don't eat white bread if I have the choice (tasteless to me) so it was quite a shock!

I seem to have the same trouble as you, although I am type 1. I usually don't have it, but sometimes I just have something different.

I cant have wholemeal products due to IBS, but I have always wondered why some people have a reaction to it, I always find it depends on what I have it with though!

I no longer eat white bread as I know its really bad for my sugar levels.I can however get away with eating shed loads of hot cross buns and teacakes :D
How weird is that? If im at a café and Im struggling as to what to have...im always relieved when I spot teacakes or fruit toast.
