Have resisted eating white bread for months 🙂. Today went past the local bread stall and they had some lovely white bread rolls nice and crusty. Could not resit the temptation, now paying the price 3 1/2 hours later BS still at 16.7 well brassed off. :( :(

It had to be done... if only to remind yourself of the consequences. Hope your BG comes down soon so you feel better.

Yes, its a good reminder of what the stuff does to one, don't think I will be having a hypo tonight, though the rain is starting to cool the area down.

I think the worry is that there are so many people out there who have no idea what it will do to them because they were never told :( People get sent home with a diagnosis and an instruction to 'eat healthily', and a lot of them will think that a nice crusty roll or baguette fresh from the bakery is healthy...

It came as a complete surprise to me. Buns, biscuits, sweets, chocolate bars were all obvious but a plain ham sandwich? But you may as well be putting several spoons of sugar in your tea.

I only discovered it because I bought my own meter. A chance discovery. When I mentioned white bread to the GP he said, 'oh yes, that's right'. I felt like saying well why the bloody hell didn't you warn me about it then.

At least my levels are now getting back to near normal 8.8 at the moment, definitely shows a very big spike spike and comes down comes down rapidly.

You are Fred, I say, you are Fred Elliot and I claim my ?5 😉

(You might not understand that if you're not a fan of Corrie :D)

I remember Fred, but not the saying, was not into corrie that much. :D

Did you actually weigh the bread roll? Depending on size could be anything from 30 - 60 carbs hence your problem :( h Glad numbers have improved now.

Never gave it a thought to weigh it, it was not one of the ones full of air and no bread, more like what a roll used to be like. Judging by my high results I would say it was loaded to the hilt with carbs. :(.

When I do get the urge to eat a nice crusty white roll I tend to have a part baked ciabatta roll and cut it in half and let the misses have half, im watching the brunch show now on C4 and there stuffing there faces with burgers!!! 😱

It's the speed of the release too. The wholegrain of wheat contains a mix of carbohydrates, cellulose, hemicellulose, oligosaccharides, disaccgarides and monosaccharides, some of which we don't even digest because we don't have the correct enzymes. Highly processed white flour only has simple monosaccharide and disaccharide carbs in it.

Furthermore it is produced using high speeds steel rollers which run at high temperatures, killing off some of the nutrition and producing a very fine particle. This is essential because of the Chorleywood or 'No Time' industrial bread baking process. Even stoneground white flour is better because it is slow and the particle size is bigger. This modern stuff is like rocket fuel. Occasionally, flour mills have been known to explode. It's the very fine particle size that causes it. It is so fine it exists suspended in the air.

Flour Powered Flame Thrower

Some refined flours such as semolina or couscous are more yellow and are more grainy. You can sometimes get away with these, depending on your own personal insulin response. Pasta is made from semolina. I tend to be able to eat half portions without problem.

My doctor told me eat a normal diet. A normal diet for me used to include chocolate, sweets, cakes, biscuits, white bread, puddings and all kinds of things. I am more aware and more carefull now....

Frightening.

Mind you, as a child, I remember my father going to the GP and the doctor offering him a cigarette from a box that he kept on the desk in the consulting room.

it is very scary especially as my doctor always claims he has diabetes.

I remember one doctor we used to have was a chain smoker, because smokeing affects my chest I always tried to see any other doctor bar him
