hi i had whipples surgery 5 years ago for bile duct cancer.that means the took my judeanal, bile duct, part of the stomach, and head of my pancrias,
i was diognosed with diabetes 3 years ago but was discharged fro diabetic clinic as my diabetese was controlled by diet(high fat diet)
ok until 3 months ago started losing weight thought cancer was back had ct scan i was clear of cancer so my consultant handed me over to dietician.who she checked what i was eating and was ok with it, she then said we will check your blood sugar as she said this could make you loose weight.my blood sugar was then 22. they kept me in to see diabetic nurse sat there all day nurse said diabetic nurse would phone me at home (bed shortage)
got home and nurse rang to say she will be in contact with my gp for him to get an urgent referel to the diabetic team at local hospital,2 days later recieved letter to attend diabetic clinic on the 28th febuary 2018. and this was supposed to be an urgent referal.
ive been back to my gp he has said will have to wait for hospital to get in touch,
each day my blood sugar is never below 14 and as high as 32 at night , i feel ok what can i do
thank you

Hi Phillip, I had distal pancreatectomy which removed the tail and body of my pancreas. I believe the head of the pancreas has the most insulin producing cells which is probably why you have managed so far on diet. I was diabetic for 4 years before I needed insulin, it might be the remaining bit of your pancreas is atrophied ie dying so it’s probable that insulin isn’t getting produced any more or not much anyways. It is atrocious that they are expecting you to wait that long when it is obvious you need insulin. I would call your GP and try and get an emergency appointment with a diabetes specialist nurse. The problem is they don’t understand us pancreatic diabetics ( Type 3c) we don’t fit into any boxes and we definitely don’t tick them. They only way is to challenge them, those numbers are far too high and the fact you have lost weight to me screams insulin needed. Hope you get answers, I know you said you feel well but, I don’t want to scare you, but that could change...fast. Please call them first thing tomorrow and demand they sort it ASAP! Elaine.

Welcome to the hepato-pancreato-Biliary surgery club.
10% of pancreas left after major pancreatic surgery 5 years ago. Type 3c straight after surgery.
My surgeon would hit the roof if I was treated like that. Can you not phone his secretary to explain what is happening. My surgery was over 8 hours and i’m Sure my surgeon would like proper after care after his hard work. This is totally unacceptable take it further if you get no joy.
