I am feeling the need to vent about my morning blood sugar levels. I am just so fed up of waking with too high levels. I just start the day feeling thirsty, tired and plain grouchy.

My readings have been, 16.7, 14.8, 19.4, 16.0, 11.2, 15.9, 14.9, 15.1

This is just rubbish. 3 of these I know have been caused by hypos over night where I have woken up. I am not sure if on other occasions I have not woken. I am on split doses of levemir. I have 8 units in the morning and I was on 1.5 in the evening. I tried not having any last night, I did not hypo but still woke with high levels.

I don't know what to do, the only solution I can think of is going back to waking at about 5:30 and having a shot of humalog to counteract the dreaded DP.

My last hba1c was 8.4 which I know is not awful, but this really does not reflect at all how all over the place my control is.

Sorry for the whinge, I try not to go on the D too much in real life as everyone would be sick to the back teeth of me, but sometimes I need to just say how c**p it is.

Hi Rachel sorry to hear you are having a rubbish time :(

Could you move the times of the levemir to see if it helps?

I'd also keep your team up to date with this, so they are aware - I know the pump situation is horrendous but it might keep you top of their list if it ever improves.

x

I can understand how frustrating and horrid waking up to those levels must be Rachel. Such a shame they have kept you waiting for so long for that pump as it would surely help you to overcome this morning rise which seems very pronounced.

Don't know if it would help in any way, but I was listening to a programme the other day on the radio and it was talking about stress. They didn't mention diabetes, but when the lady began talking about cortisol and circadian rhythms I pricked my ears up thinking 'Dawn Phenomenon'! She was explaining how cortisol, the stress hormone, works to a cycle (the circadian rhythm) and causes your liver to release energy at certain times, particularly in the morning but at other times of the day too. Obviously this is what causes DP, but it made me wonder if there is any possibility of this hormone being checked and perhaps regulated in some way that would lessen its action? You'd probably need to see an endocrinologist to find out, but might be something you could ask your doctor or DSN about.

Apart from that, might it be worth doing those 5:30 injections in order to wake to better levels and feeling better generally, albeit with broken sleep?

Hmm, interesting, but I get DP too and my body doesn't produce enough cortisol (Addison's). I'm not on the cortisone injections yet either. There must be another trigger somewhere.

That's 'scotched' that theory then!

Alan, I think you are right I am just going to have to set an alarm for an early dose of humalog. I just feel this is so unfair on my husband, as it is not just me that wilk have disturbed sleep. At least people are understanding that I feel rough in the mornings often due to my diabetes.

remember your whole routine has changed recently returning to work Rachel ...juggling work and family can be tough x hugs x🙂
