Its 4am and I'm playing Meatloaf to try and cheer myself up. The pain from the nurothopy keeps me awake. I was taking Tramadol along with pregablin but have come off tramadol because its very addictive and although I only took 2 at night I am suffering withdrawal symptoms. In the meatime my muscles are getting weaker and I can hardly walk. Has anyone else suffered this and is it permanent?
Love to read all your problems and yours Lolly puts mine into context - good luck you have had it hard.

Hubby suffers with osteoarthritis which sometimes keeps him awake. He takes pain killers from the doctor and also some tablets called syndol. I'd seek advice from doctor or pharmacist before taking them thoe, they contain a muscle relaxant.

If you feel up to it, you might like to try seated tai chi. The exercises are very gentle, and you do them sitting down. To encourage hubby, I join him and have found they help to lower blood sugars as well. There is a good DVD called seated tai chi (or something very similar) available from www.taichiforarthritis.com, and a discussion forum.

I hope you feel better.

Hi I had bad Neuropathy , I was on tramadol 2 three times a day , Pregabalin 3 times a day and Amitriptyline 75 mg at night ...😱 the pain was unbearable and yes Tramadol are addictive , I was on them for a while until my body adapted to lower sugar levels after being in the 20's for a few years . The Neuropathy has totally gone now , mine was caused by the nerves being aggravated by high sugars then normal levels , I did not have any nerve damage though . I am no longer on any meds for it and no longer get any pain at all . it did take a while for things to settle down though. How do you find the Pregabalin ( Lyrica) all I did while on them was sleep all the time . hope you feel better soon xx

Hi Joan,

I have suffered from neuropathy for a few years now, I found pregabalin (Lyrica) did more for me than gabapentin, however, the two work in slightly different ways to each other. So it is worth trying both.

Other than that normal pain killers won't touch neuropathy, you need something to block nerve pain, hence the use of some anti-depressants in small doses, the drugs used for the treatment of epilepsy can also be useful.

The problem I have with a number of these drugs is the tendency to miss days, even on the smallest of doses I seem to be knocked out. True, not much paint that I was aware of, but then I didn?t care!

A couple of important things with neuropathy, until you?ve suffered from it no-one will understand the degree or intensity of the pain, or that it can be phantom and move around for no reason ? my left thumb has to be the most agonising place and there is nothing I can do to make myself comfortable.

Your GP needs to be supportive of you, it is worth seeing a neurologist and having them diagnose the condition, then if the pain can?t reasonably be controlled you need to see a pain specialist, these tend to be specialist pain units, you may need to travel to find one, but your GP and/or neurologist can refer you. The bad news is, that there is often a waiting list.

They can?t wave a magic wand and rid you of the pain, some will look at the suitable options in terms of medication, others will work with you on the pain management. I do get the impression some aren?t used to the way neuropathy presents, and this is the reason why I?d suggest that you also see a neurologist as well. That way they have a diagnosis that they can?t really argue with.

I wish you well, one final thing, don?t just go assuming pain is neuropathy once it?s been diagnosed, there are other types of pain and if it persists and can?t be controlled with your usual medication, you must seek assistance on that specific pain.

Oh, neuropathy if brought on with just short term high blood sugar can be short term, if brought on by long term high levels e.g. before diagnosis then the damage can be more permanent. Equally, it can come and go over a long duration.

Good luck.

Hi, Can I ask your opinion here?

You may or not have seen my thread re bad head/face ache down one side of my face? Long story short, the doc said it was stress even though i thought it a type of neuropathy. Put me on amytriptalline 10mg (anti depressant, small dose as you have mentioned), went back 2 weeks later bit improved, asked again if he thought neuropathy, no he insisted stress. Real bad headaches fr last 10 days, have made appointment with doc? do you think i should ask for referral to neurologist? When i get the pain i want to shut off from the world and sleep, but cant as work full time, have been in tears when by myself. sorry to waffle . :(
