I would like to know from Type 2's, what has been your highest BS reading to date post-meal and what did you eat?

I was shocked last night to get a reading of 12.2 which has been my highest reading to date and i had some left over chicken tikka from the indian meal the night before and i had some basmati rice with it (20g dried weight) and some leftover chappati.

Unfortunately I didn't have a meter until my D was well-controlled with diet/exercise/metformin, so I can't help by providing a shock-horror figure from the past.

My most recent post-meal high was 7.1, after exactly the same lunch as the following day when it was 4.7!

Two hours after eating some chocolate brownie (unusual for me but someone at work bought it in for their birthday) my BG is 15.2!

Usually it's 6 to 7 before meals.

How far post meal did you do your test? It's normal to have a rise and fall. I'm not diabetic but occasionally check my levels, and had a 9.6 once about an hour after a massive meal with syrup sponge!

I often have readings above 10 a couple of hours after eating. This is due to tablets not coping with the diabetes, may be going onto insulin soon. The highest I have ever been was 17.4 after a big meal. Saturday evening I was 11.3, but had been snacking. I wouldn't worry too much, you will always get the odd high and sometimes a low for no apparent reason.

What was your reading before eating? It's important to know in order to determine whether the food actually caused the rise. As I'm on insulin I am different, but my highest post-meal level was 17.1, my lowest to date was a 1.7! 😱 The other night I had a very unexpected 13.3 (a rise of 6.2 from my pre-meal level), but that is very unusual for me these days.

Unfortunately, because i am on limited test strips (i have to buy them) i am wary when i use them, i try to use no more than one or two a day so sometimes i just don't know the best times to test, although i do try and vary the times of day, it does get difficult when you are on limited supply. I am due to test an about an hour to see what my reading is after my lunch which has been low carb so i'll see what that reads.

Four years ago, i used to be able to tolerate more carbs but just lately it seem like my 'honeymoon' period is coming to an end :(

Until the beginning of this year, I was regularly in the high teens, 17s and 18s, were not at all unusual, and occasionally in the 20s. There were some really nasty hypos too with the lowest to date being 1.2. My record high, in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, was 38.7.

I'm a regular "high" girl too, 17's and 18's are normal after food - still trying to get my insulin ratios sorted. Usual waking levels around 13.

Now I'm on MDI it should get better / easier to control, or at least thats what they told me!!!! 😛

Well, i've just tested after my lunch and the reading is an acceptable 7.5, my lunch consisted of:

homemade soup
25g block of cheese and beetroot
60g of leftover pasta bake

The only carbs would have been in the pasta and very little in homemade soup. It seems like now my pancreas is not tolerating an awful lot of carbs but am hoping in time with significant weight loss it will kick start my pancreas again. The pasta was only 20g of carbs but it has showed me that my meal last night was a lot more carbs than my body could cope with - all very interesting.

blimey mine was 16.8 about 4 mnth ago before bed

Just shows how different we all are. T2 pancreas working at different %. The big "D" isnt exact

My highest was just under 23 in Jan, was running in the high teens 16 + for the early part of Jan and took ages for a doctor to change my meds. Docs said running in the 20's was ok :(.

I'd like to hear the doctor's explanation about why that would be ok 😱 I'd probably be thinking about getting another GP!

How long have you been diagnosed pav, and what medication are you on?

Somewhere in the 20s when I was in hospital (it was 400 as they measure it here). I'd had a cheese sandwich and glass of orange juice. Highest since coming out of hospital has been around 15 but I'd pigged out a bit at lunch knowing I had an unavoidable hour and a half walk a short time later and I've been struggling to keep my blood sugar from plummeting in the afternoon. I'd had two multi grain rolls with turkey, egg and salad, a glass of fruit juice, a yoghurt and a bag of crisps. By the time I got home it was back to around 4.

It's only been 2 weeks since I was diagnosed so still struggling to find the right levels of insulin.

21.7 after what I thought was a safe chinese! We'd eaten from there before and I asked the question so I knew they didn't use MSG, What I didn't know was that the takeaway had changed ownership. Never been there since!!!

Been diagnosed 13 years, had a HbA1c test in Nov / Dec and report said refer to doctor, then had a further 2 HbA1c tests in Jan and Feb all showing the level rising. Doctors ignored the rise, and said carry on as normal and it will come down on its own.

I went to see a nurse for a B12 jab, and when I told her she was mad at what the docs said, and arranged another appointment with a different doc who changed my meds.

I was originally on 3000 mg of metformin spaced at 1000 mg 3 times a day. Then after the nurse intervened 80 mg of gliclazide was added in the morning.

This has brought my numbers down to on average between 4.4 and 8.5 with the odd high in the low 10's with a peak of 13.2 (having a bad day) and a low of 3.6.

Recently queried the amount of metformin I was on, as I have seen some comments saying 2000 mg was the normal max dose these days, and doctor has reduced the metformin to 2000 mg now.

White floor seams to be my major problem as that sends the numbers right up, also found Dry roasted peanuts to be a problem but salted roast nuts seam ok.

Have been looking at changing doctors, though the ones taking on new patients also have mixed reviews about the care they give.

Well, pav, it sounds like you have got back to some good numbers but no thanks to the doctor who should have been advising you. It does make you worry for all those who don't pursue things or question advice :(

Think I spoke too soon, levels are creeping back up, 10.7 tonight where normally the are a max of 6.0. Also noticed my pre driving tests where I normally have to have a snack to ensure they stay above 5.0 are up as well today they were 8.0 when I expected them to be around 4.4. :(

Higher readings appear to coincide with the reduction in metformin from 3000 mg a day to 2000 mg. Would not of thought metformin would of made that big a difference.

Metformin works principally by reducing the liver's production of glucose. Perhaps it will take a week or two for things to rebalance for you on the lower dose?
