I am trying to tidy up and declutter and I found three boxes of unopened/unused 500mg Metformin with pretty long dates on them.
They were prescribed and collected when I was coming off meds and before I'd realised I would be entirely successful in managing without them. Two boxes expire this time in 2022 and the other one in November 2021.

I know if I get them back to the pharmacy they will simply be destroyed and that seems wasteful. Is there anything more useful I can do? For instance do any charities accept meds for needy causes? I have some meds such as blood pressure tablets as well but they are expired - though I read online that they are still useful long after the expiry date if they've been stored properly.

I don’t think anyone/anywhere will accept any meds, even unopened. They are prescribed drugs and if someone needed them they would get them free. Take them to pharmacy who will dispose of them safely. As wasteful as it seems.

In the current climate, the pharmacy may not even take them off you!

Every single med I get returned from the care homes is destroyed most is unopened and in date this includes controlled drugs for end of life treatment. I hate to see it go in the special bins for collection but it is the law I'm afraid.
