This is a fairly minor issue in the big scheme of things but it's starting to worry me nevertheless;

A few weeks ago I had a meds review with the doctor and he quite unexpectedly said he would halve the Metformin dose I'd need to take as my HbA1c was pretty good at 5.8 and he was concerned I might get hypos, something which never really happens to me i don't think.

I've never had a BG reading below 5 and when he measured it at the time it was 5.6, unusually low for the time of day.

Problem is my readings are starting to creep up from average of around 7 to 8's, 9's and 10's with no change of diet (which is pretty good normally).

What worries me is my background retinopathy might get worse in the mean time, but bizarrely my eyesight seems to have improved :confused:

Should I go back to the docs and get the meds put back up?

I'd go back to the doc with a full set of readings to illustrate the point. He/she may well decide that you were on the correct dose in the first place and put you back on it.

I agree with LeeLee, go back to the doc with the evidence of your readings. Although it is possible to have low blood sugars on metformin, I believe it is rare, and highly unlikely to be of a level that users of insulin or other glucose-lowing drugs might be. Since your levels are good, but you are not experiencing hypos, and now your levels are up a notch, I would think it logical to put your dose back up.

I rather think that your doctor, like many, thinks that having an excellent HbA1c as you have must mean that your levels are dropping dangerously low all the time, but that really doesn't have to be the case. If you manage your diabetes well, then such an HbA1c is pretty much spot on in my opinion. He should also bear in mind your concerns about your retinopathy possibly worsening, which are outweighing your concerns about the hypos you're not having! 🙄

I would have thought that your reading was spot on and your meds were set just right. I'd go back to the doc like the others have said.

Thanks for the replies, I was quite happy with my levels as they were and I can't imagine this will help with the retinopathy so I'll go back soon and get it reviewed again.

Also I'll try and get in some more exercise to keep a lid on the BGs.
