What pen does everyone use for their basal insulin? (I have only just cottoned on to the fact that the Apidra crisis might affect me!) I currently use a sanofi OptiPen for my Lantus, which may now be being discontinued. I am working on persuading my DSN to move me to Levemir too, so looking for options for either insulin

Thanks!

I used Novorapid and Levemir, so I had 2 different colour Novopen 4's and cartridges.

I have Levemir flexpens as well - must prefer them than having to put a cartridge in like I have to do with my humalog pen

Last ones I used were

Green Autopen 24 (Lantus) - horrid but at least it was the 1u version
Humapen Memoir (Humalog) - not currently available but v. useful 'dose memory' function.

Lantus Solostar disposable.🙂

Used to use a pair of Novopen Fours. I use syringes and that now when I need to.

Luxura pens - 1 x green half units for Humalog outside house (plus a cartridge of Humalin I in pencil case), 1 x burgandy for Humalog in kitchen & 1 x champagne for Humalin I (plus a cartridge of Humalog in same case).

Definitely a bonus to be able to use same pen for both insulins, so that eg on mountain marathons I can carry just one pen and one syringe with both cartridges.

Definitely a bonus to reuse pens, so that I only have to store cartridges in fridge (before starting to use) instead of much bulkier disposable pens. Plus, I don't like the waste of resources in throwing away larger items, which need larger sharps bins.

I use Levemir flexpens too.

Carol used to use flexpens, but then changed to cartridges, when she changed from Novomix30 twice a day to Novomix30 (blue), Novorapid (red) and Levemir (silver).
On MDI she used the red and the silver, but then she was given the novopen 4 and they don't do a red one in that. So rapid became blue and levemir stayed silver.

It came in handy that the rapid was in a red pen. Because of that, I noticed immediately that Carol injected rapid instead of Levemir one night.

I've used Lantus Solostar since diagnosis 🙂

I use the Novopen3 for my insulatard, reason- it goes up to 70 units, and I take 68 units am and pm.

I use the Novopen4 for my novorapid.

I think the Novopen4 is the best pen availalable, it is so smooth and easy to replace cartridge, only problem is it only goes up to 60 units, otherwise I would use it for both insulins

I keep meaning to ask for a novopen 4, might put in for one on my next prescription 🙂
