It depends if you are self funding a meter and strips it can become quite costly, the cheapest we know of to self fund is the SD Codefree, if cost isn't an issue then buy what you feel you would benefit more from x

Hello and welcome to the forum Tonyjoe. 🙂 I use a Codefree meter which is the one I prefer and the pricker is a really good one too. Easy to use. Plus inexpensive to run.

As Kaylz says if self funding the SD code free is the most popular on here due to the lower cost of the strips, the bigger names in meters the strips tend to be around £25 or more for a pot of 50.

The other problems types 2's have is most GP's and DN's say we don't need to test and rely on the annual or if lucky the 3 monthly HbA1c tests, which is totally wrong. Metering is the way forward as using one before and then two hours after a meal allows you to build up a pattern of what food affects you and in what way. As we are all individual food does tend to affect use differently in the way it affects our levels.

If on hypo causing meds docs and DN's should supply strips on prescription, which brings on the next hurdle. A few years ago we could choose what meter we liked and they would get prescriptions, we used to ring the meter suppliers up and they would send use a meter free as the profit was in the test strip. Now a days the GP practices tend to support one or two meters where the test strips are around £10 or less. How patient friendly the practice is and how switched on with diabetes they do on occasions limit the tests strips some as low as like 50 per month or two.

It is worth asking your DN or GP if they will issue a prescription for test strips, if they agree they will probably supply a meter free as well.

If you want to self fund the SD code free is available from, remember to select the I am a diabetic option to remove the vat and the mmoll version for UK use https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/codefree-blood-glucose-monitoring-system-mmoll-or-mgdl/ The starter packs only come with 10 test strips, so you may want to order more supplies at the same time.
