Your stomach often rumbles at the most embarrassing moments: during a job interview or during examination in a dead silent room. But what is the purpose of this growling? And what is the relation between a noisy stomach and hunger?

Once your stomach has digested everything a so-called big clean-up process will begin. Your stomach will start retracting and these contractions will ripple like waves all the way down to your small intestine. In this manner your stomach is able to get rid of all undigested food particles and bacteria. As this process progresses, air and gas in your stomach will increase. This is causing your stomach to make those grunting noises. But what does this have to with hunger?
