Type 2
Hi everyone
Was told im type 2 about 3 years ago have managed to keep sugars stable on diet and exercise but last blood tests levels raised and was given Metformin

Could you advise on what the best vegetables and fruits that are low in carbs are to eat and also best type of rice and pasta if any
I usually buy Cauliflower rice rarely eat pasta and buy Sourdough bread and have about 6slices a week
Thanks

As you rightly say foods which are low carbohydrate are better options. People often comment the veg that grow below ground are high carb, those that grow on the ground medium carb and above ground low carb, however I can think of a few exceptions where an individual will tolerate some better than others and that is only something you would find by testing your blood glucose levels.
Fruits which are lowest carb tend to be berries. Bananas, grapes, tropical fruit highest carb and apples, pears, citrus somewhere in the middle but again can be very individual what is tolerated.
There are some low carb pastas made from edamame or black bean which are good if you want pasta dishes.
I'm not sure there are any acceptable low carb rice but others may know of some.
Also some low carb breads but you may find the sourdough OK for you.
The book or app is really good for giving you the carb value of a whole range of foods or search the internet for your chosen food with TOTAL carb and you will find a per 100g value so you can compare.

Welcome to the forum @Freeloader

Have you got a BG meter to observe your body’s reactions to various different foods?

Many members here find they get some surprises with the way their metabolism handles some foods vs their reputation. And that can include some happy surprises, where some find they have a little more liberty with some choices than they might have expected.

Many Drs and practice nurses seem to actively dissuade people with T2 from self-monitoring, but for many forum members it can be a very powerful technique.

Check immediately before eating, and again 2hrs after the first mouthful. Ideally looking for a BG rise from the meal/food of no more than 2-3mmol/L. If you see bigger rises, you can try adjusting the portion size or perhaps swapping to a different carb. Sometimes just having things at a different time of day can make a difference.
