I am a vegetarian (for over 30 years) and newly put on insulin. I was on tablets since aged 40 (now 53). We are going on holiday to Portugal next month and I am not looking forward to it at all for worrying about what to eat.
Obviously I have been on many holidays since my diagnosis, but we typically only go on short breaks of 3 nights. And on tablets it didn't seem such a worry. In Europe, the only food that caters for veggies seems to be Italian like pasta and pizza.
Will it be the end of the world if I eat that sort of food for 3/4 days while on holiday? Should I maybe increase my insulin a bit if I eat more carbs than I have been?
I would look for a Thai restaurant but we are staying in a resort near Lisbon, so there may not be that much choice (we don't drive so won't be hiring a car).
What do you guys do when you go on holiday? Do you relax a bit, not exactly stuff yourselves with chocolate cake, but not be as strict as when you aren't on holiday? Do you stick to rigud limits? Or do you let it go a little? I suppose how often you go on hols makes a difference. We only go a couple of times a year, for as I say, not usually more than 3 nights.
For UK hols it shouldn't be such a problem because pub meals cater well for veggies without having to pile on the carbs. So we may start having one of our holidays per year in the UK. I really don't mind. And I love the Channel Islands.
