What do you do on holiday if you are veggie?

I am a vegetarian (for over 30 years) and newly put on insulin. I was on tablets since aged 40 (now 53). We are going on holiday to Portugal next month and I am not looking forward to it at all for worrying about what to eat.

Obviously I have been on many holidays since my diagnosis, but we typically only go on short breaks of 3 nights. And on tablets it didn't seem such a worry. In Europe, the only food that caters for veggies seems to be Italian like pasta and pizza.

Will it be the end of the world if I eat that sort of food for 3/4 days while on holiday? Should I maybe increase my insulin a bit if I eat more carbs than I have been?

I would look for a Thai restaurant but we are staying in a resort near Lisbon, so there may not be that much choice (we don't drive so won't be hiring a car).

What do you guys do when you go on holiday? Do you relax a bit, not exactly stuff yourselves with chocolate cake, but not be as strict as when you aren't on holiday? Do you stick to rigud limits? Or do you let it go a little? I suppose how often you go on hols makes a difference. We only go a couple of times a year, for as I say, not usually more than 3 nights.

For UK hols it shouldn't be such a problem because pub meals cater well for veggies without having to pile on the carbs. So we may start having one of our holidays per year in the UK. I really don't mind. And I love the Channel Islands.

I tend to relax a little when on vacation, though I'm not on insulin so I can't reply to that. One thing to note is that we (or at least I) tend to be a little more active during the day (perhaps evening) I tend to accept that there may be hit to my BG but it's only for a few days.
As for the veggie diet, I would have thought that Portugal is influence by a more Mediterranean diet (a quick check on Google indicated that) so I would hope there should be many options.

I only do self-catering, but I do eat a lot of cakes when I'm on holiday (which means guessing the carbs and having an extra injection), and I find, like Martin says, that because I'm more active during the day I don't tend to have problems with high blood sugar - in fact, I tend to have a lot of hypos.

I just re-read your post and found to my chagrin that you are staying in a resort 'near Lisbon'. Whoops. So enter your resort name and 'vegetarian restaurants' and see what comes up. Th public transport system in Portugal is extremely good and cheap so you could always catch a 'bus or train to Lisbon but be careful of the return times, they can be quite early so a late dinner might not be on the cards.

Hello Squirrel

Are you on fixed units of insulin with your meals or do you carb count and calculate your insulin accordingly?

If you limit the amount of carbs you eat normally at home then I would carry on in much the same way. Research the area and have a look at some of the menus so you can see what's available.

This guide has some useful information about travel and about insulin absorption in the sun etc https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/life-with-diabetes/travel

Above all have a lovely holiday, Portugal will have veggie diabetics who need feeding too so there will be choices 🙂
