It was always one of those things that our mothers could only buy occasionally when they needed it for a specific purpose eg the marzipan for the Xmas cake - I know neither of my parents considered a Christams cake to be a proper one unless marzipaned and Royal(ly) Iced ! - whereas neither of their daughters really liked marzipan. Also that annual event caused a jar of commercially made apricot jam to magically appear in the pantry - already opened and some used. Rare treat, buying jam ......
