Hi

Levels are continuing to reduce now apart from my morning levels which is still around 9 however it was 7.9 this morning so hopefully morning levels will continue to reduce. Before my lunch and evening meal I am low 5s. But sometimes now i am getting low 4s should i be treating these as Hypos?

I am currently taking 2 Gliclazide each morning and 1 500mg Metformin with my breakfast for the last week i have now been taking a 2nd Metformin with my evening meal. Once my BG level on a morning is a little lower I will becoming off the Gliclazide.

Levels under 4 are considered hypoglycaemic. However if you're about to drive, you should eat something to get your levels up above 5 before setting out. 🙂

Yup, 'four is the floor' as they say 🙂 Although you can function well enough at lower levels, you can't know whether your levels may be on the way down, plus you can't always trust those pesky meters to give you an accurate reading. 🙂 Good to hear your levels are improving Sheilagh.

About 4 is the point at which the body will add glucose to your blood because it thinks you are getting low. It is a homeostatic process, where the body regulates itself. That's why you are waking up with an 8 or 9. You have fasted since going to bed and your blood sugars decline, then it adds a big dollop to keep you going. That bit is working fine with you it seems. It works for most Type 2s. The problem with Type 2s is that it should come down quicker. Your meds will help during the day but of course, you don't have those at night when you are asleep.

Some people try to trick the body by having something to eat before bed, something which is slow release so your bloods never drop low enough for you to get your glucose boost.

Any thing below 4.0 gets a treat of some kind, if close to a meal time will bring the meal forward. If driving I try to keep above at least 6.0 and closer to 8.0 to allow driving time and a bit of shopping time.

Thanks for your advice. 🙂
