I'm so glad you posted that poem, Northerner - I had completely forgotten (if I ever realised) that my exemption card expired! 😱 I had my fifth diaversary about a month ago. Just got R to check the card (he has it because he collects my prescriptions) and it ran out on 15th January (which is a bit odd because that's about a fortnight before I was diagnosed o_O ).

Um - please could someone tell me what I do to get another one? And should I do anything about the prescription R collected for me last week?! The chemist didn't ask him for any money - in fact, R says that the chemist told him that my card had nearly run out (he forgot to tell me 🙄 ), but clearly the chemist had the date wrong.
You need to ask at your GP surgery for a renewal form, fill it in and they will send it off for you. The cards are dated to a month before you apply! You will be fine about the prescription. They are supposed to send a reminder but failed to do so for lots of people a year or so ago and there was a huge fuss because they had a big crackdown and started charging people! Diabetes UK got them to dismiss all the charges because there were lots of people who'd never even got a card in the first place because they were diagnosed before they came out and never got told! Don't worry, I was about two years late getting my replacement and didn't have to pay anything. 🙂

If you do get charged for a prescription before your new card comes through ( or for anyone applying for the first time) you need to ask the Pharmacy for a form FP57, so you can claim the cost back when your card is approved. If you don't get this form at the time, (when you pay for the prescription) you can't then get one later, or claim the money back. (I found out the hard way when I was first diagnosed, because my GP forgot to tell me I could claim exemption, and the Pharmacist pointed out that I could, but didn't tell me I needed the special form.)
