Hi All

Just got diagnosed, three days before my birthday and holiday. What a shocker, well lifestyle change in progress, lots to deal with scared of food now rather than craving carbs lol.

On plus side I get to see where my taxes go and the amazing work of the NHS.

Feel like a pin cushion and already tired of everyone telling me, do this and do that.

Forced smile

Hi Jase, welcome to the forum 🙂 As you say, what a birthday present! 😱 How did the diagnosis come about? Have you been given any medication and a blood glucose meter? Many people find Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter helpful introductions, and if you want some good holiday reading, Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker would give you a good understanding of what it's all about and how to deal with these early months 🙂

Diabetes is serious, but the good news is that it is manageable with the right knowledge and application. My advice would be not to go potty, but take things at a pace you can manage - this is a marathon, not a sprint, so you need to make changes you can stick with. Nothing awful is going to happen to you overnight, just try and be sensible for your birthday and holiday and keep the carbs in moderation - and enjoy it! 🙂 Whatever questions or concerns you may have, I am sure we will be able to help with, so please ask away! 🙂 Going anywhere nice?

Thanks Northerner will be sure to read those links, currently on metformin and Glicazide. Got diagnosed as i had thrush, doctor did a pee test and told me go to your GP imeadiatley and was not smilling, wednesday was all a bit much to take in, but coming to terms with it now. Been feeling tired for months and months started to be really thirsty and up in the night to pee 3-4 times. All makes sense now. Especially the blurred vision and the loss of body mass. I thought it was just age lol.

Drugs are starting to take effect and levels coming down, i just so glad that i finally kown what all these symptoms are in a way so i can deal with it.

This is the problem, especially with Type 2, as it often hits later in life and many of the symptoms can be put down to other things (I was 49) 🙄 Honestly, you will feel much, much better once things are under control - I know that I had almost forgotten what it felt like to feel well and it was fantastic once I got things under control! 🙂 Blurred vision should improve, although it can get a bit worse initially, but is only temporary - high levels cause a distortion of the lens, don't go buying any new glasses because they will probably be useless in a few weeks! I bought some cheap reading glasses and turned up the zoom on my browser which did the trick for me 🙂

Hi Jason and welcome to the forum Sorry you've joined us on your birthday but Happy birthday anyway. As others have said you should soon feel so much better. Enjoy your hols too 🙂

Hi Jason, welcome to the pin cushion club :D sorry but I just couldn't resist 🙂
Being diagnosed with diabetes is rather a hammer blow but diabetes is manageable , there are much worse conditions than this.
Having diabetes needn't stop you doing anything you want to do, you can lead a full life !
potatoes, rice , pasta and bread are the worst culprits. , but it doesn't mean you can't ever have them again, fruit is healthy but we often have to be careful with fruit too.
Whatever diet/meals you choose it must be manageable long term, it's no good mainly having salads if you realy don't like them.
Here endeth my lesson.

I hope soon that that forced smile will turn into a real one.

Must be a pattern here, I was DX'd 10 days before my birthday last year!!!

Welcome to the Forum.....

Your symptoms sound all too familiar, but the good news is that diabetes is totally manageable, but it's a lifelong commitment.
