Hi Everyone,

I think families are the worst culprits, as my elderly mother keeps referring to her friend (in her 70's) and exclaims "I wouldn't worry about your diabetes, Judy has it, and it doesn't put her up or down!"

The other good one is "diabetes type 2? That's nothing, every second person seems to have it!"

Comments like these make my blood boil, there isn't a day goes by, when I have to remind myself that I have diabetes and pull in the reigns where necessary. Is is evil of me to think, "wish you were diagnosed and life wouldn't be so simplistic then?"

Ignorance is the problem. Generally, people think that Type 2's have nobody to blame but themselves for their condition and all they have to do, is stop eating pizzas and cakes, non of which I ever was guilty of eating. Interestingly, my doctor told me that if it was a fat issue, then every overweight person would have the disease. in my case, it was hereditary!

What I have become, is very defensive and I just wondered if everyone felt the same way?

Donna 🙂

Hi Everyone,

Donna 🙂

Dunno bout everyone, but this one is Donna, defence mechanism? And of course I'm really sodding ancient now so therefore everyone knows automatically I am T2 .....

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hmmm... I guess the mature thing to do is to say, playfully, 'so... what to you reckon diabetics are supposed to look like, then....?' and gradually bend the conversation round to explaining the facts and describing diabetics you know to give her an idea of what they really DO look like (i.e. normal).... this way, she might start off ignorant but becomes educated through your scintillating, friendly conversation.

....Unfortunately what I most feel like doing in this situation, is grabbing the hot tongs from the BBQ and doing something creative with them...
..... so I think I'd have left the party quickly, too.

I get the comment that I can't have diabetes as I'm thin. I've had two heart ops and am Type 2 and just because I look alright people think I'm fighting fit when half the time I feel like death warmed up, but well I just grin at them and get on with life.Way hey, one life live it. Yabba dabba doo.

I do get this a lot with Carly she is only 3 and very active, I dont mind when they say "she is looking great/well" or "she is so brilliant/brave" when having injections or blood testing but not that comment it is so annoying, like you I do ignored them.... maybe I should try and ask them "what do you expect diabetics look like??" ;-)
