Well that was a surprise...

Background, I work in the outdoors, am a mountain guide and spent the winter dec to Apr in the mountains with some form of exercise each day. Diet tended to be high in high GI carbs white pasta, basmati rice, potato's etc etc. My only issue had been high cholesterol for which I was prescribed Atorvastatin about 10 years ago which I didn't like so it was changed to Rosvustatin in 2013. At the beginning of May 18 I weighed 75.5kg and am 180cm with I would say average fitness.

On my return I decided to go for a wellman check up the result of which was that I have slightly raised TRYGLICERIDES 2.2mmol/l (upper limit 1.7mmol/l) probably all that pasta and french bread... as a result another blood sample was taken for blood glucose, which came back at 7.4mmol/l but as I have been away there was a period of a month before I received the result which I had to phone up to get and was told I needed to have another test to confirm the result (unfortunately I was away for another month), but the sample was taken and an appointment was made (beginning July 18) with another nurse who is 'the diabetes specialist' as I displayed none of the characteristics she went though a full set of tests and took another blood sample to be sent off to a specialist unit. I was told that I would receive notification of an appointment sometime towards the end of October at which point they would be able to advise which type of Diabetes I have. No other advice was given.

At this point I have not seen a doctor....

So I decided to do my own investigation and follow my own course of action, as follows:

1. I bought the Dr Michael Mosley 8 week diet plan and recipe book
2. I cut out 95% of all carbohydrates (high and low GI)
3. I increased exercise to min avg of 45mins per day
4. Bought a blood glucose tester and record the figures.

Then

4. Increased exercise the 1.5 hours a day avg (mix of high and low intensity)
5. Stopped taking Rosuvastatin on the 16/08/18 (not discussed this with a doctor yet)
6. Started using Apple cider vinegar
7. Started a weekly accupuncture session (fortunately my friend in an accupuncture instructor)
8. Balance my food intake through out the day good breakfast, good lunch, early evening meal (6pm ish) and I try not to snack in between which is sometimes difficult.
9. Started taking brewers yeast to improve chromium intake (05/09/18)

So as of today

I now have an appointment with a doctor on the 26/10/18
My weight is 68.9kg BMI 21.3 as of 08/09/18
My blood glucose fluctuates but the overall band seems to have come down a little, I have spikes upto 10mmol, but generally the site between 6.5mmol and 8.0mmol fasting
I am running around 5km per day and walking a further 5km per day
Fitness has improved

Wast to hip ratio 0.87
Body fat 15.9%
Water content 64.8%

Now you might say I'm a bit obsessive and that would be true. I'm now going to keep going until the end of Oct 18 and see if any of this makes a difference or whether the poisition is someing I can do nothing about (though I'm sure my cholesterol levels will probably rocked again they were 9.5 before statins).

So after all that gushing and assuming you read this to the end, I would be very interested for anyones insights / experiences on the impact of STATINS...

I've been on Rosuvastatin 10mg since diabetes diagnosis in March. Never had any probs with it.

It's certainly worked as advertised in smacking my cholesterol into line, as of my last blood work in June.

Over the Mar => Jun period:

Total chol 5.5 => 3.2
Trigs 3.2 => 1.4
LDL 3.2 => 1.7
HDL 0.8 => 0.9
HDL ratio 6.9 => 3.6

The total, trigs, LDL and HDL percentage improvements seem to be right in line with what's supposed to happen with a statin.

From my point of view, it wins the Eddy Drug of the Year award, in terms of effectiveness, lack of side effects & cost, even if I'm not absolutely certain what effects high cholesterol actually has 🙂
 
Hi Steve, welcome to the forum 🙂 What may be happening is that you have a slow-onset form of Type 1 diabetes, given your statistics. In adults, tType 1 can take a while to manifest itself fully, so your levels can appear only slightly above normal for some time. This is what happened to me - in my case it took around 18 months where I was getting by (unknowingly, in my case, as I wasn't being tested, but hindsight showed I had been having symptoms for some time but putting them down to other things). As such, it can often be difficult to arrive at a firm diagnosis initially, but hopefully the blood tests will provide more clarity. You've obviously improved things, but that may be expected if you have made adaptations to your diet and activity levels.

If you do have this type of diabetes (also known as Type 1.5 or LADA - Latent Autoimmune Diabetes n Adulthood) then it is important to make sure that, if you become ill before your next appointment, you seek medical help. In my case I caught a virus which tipped me over the edge and it can become a medical emergency.

It may be, however that this is not the case with you as a significant number of people who are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes do not exhibit any of the usual symptoms, but worth bearing in mind as a possibility.

Do you have any family history of diabetes?
 
I'd make sure they test you properly for Type 1, not just Type 2. With that BMI etc I would have thought yr BG should be lower, for a T2. But then I'm not a doctor.

Hi Steve, I take Atorvastatin, was reluctant to start with but it’s been fine and my cholesterol is down.
