Well a couple of months in and its hard going

I used to do power walking in Devon until my hip gave out. Now I'm in the pool 3 times a week and it was sheer bliss to slide in with this heat. I actually do aquafit - mainly ladies but a few gentlemen as well. In my area there are classes in the evening as well as during the day, but the pools are open for swimming 7am - 9pm most days.

Have a look at YT videos by 'The Bald Explorer'
He shows how to find interest, satisfaction, and enjoyment in quite short easy walks. Most of them are in Sussex, an area I've never been to and probably never will, but he shows the sort of thing you can do, in towns, villages, and the countryside

Meanqueen Superscrimper started with videos about saving money, but she also does similar videos about easy walking

And as with many things on YT once you start you will find similar videos.
You can, of course, go on to do harder stuff & longer distances as you gain fitness & confidence, if you wish.

It might be a bit of a faff but if you’re not able to exercise outside or in your house, even early morning, because of the heat, then you might need to deal with the faff if you want to do some exercise to help manage your diabetes.

Probably better to do exercise that you enjoy, as I agree, swimming is a faff: the changing rooms, the smell of chlorine, the danger of athlete's foot and verrucas, having to shear my legs first, the people who don't have any lane discipline etc.
Going for a walk is much better, you don't need any fancy kit for it, and you can stop for a nice sit down if you're passing a bench, pop into the shop to get milk as part of the walk, and it doesn't cost anything (apart from the milk).

I prefer walking to swimming , the gym or anything that involves ......getting your kit .....into the car .....changing .....exercise ......out ......shower .....change again .....come home ......its easier for me personally to just get out and walk
 
I walk later in the evening or early morning particularly at this time of year as it is cooler. Walking after your evening meal is also a good way to help bring your levels down from it. I am actually about to head out now and stretch my legs. I love summer evenings!

I went out the other morning spraying weedkiller on the pavements here , it was so nice . But by 8 am it was hot
 
Yes, I seem to have had a similar start. Diagnosis, shock, confusion, learning, goal setting, new diet.

But no exercise. I couldn't. It was too painful. Too exhausting. However I did get to grips with my diet looking at every aspect in detail. Learned so much too.

Eventually, after about six months (I think) I started light exercise. Short 30 minute walks to the shops and back. It was all I could manage. After a while as my strength and stamina improved and my weight refuced, I could walk further BUT I found it a bit boring.

To solve the boredom problem I kitted myself out with a decent mp3 player and decent headphones and started walking listening to music. It worked. Kept me happy whilst truging along. Now I walk 2 to 3 hours a day on the beach with no problems at all. No joint pain. No exhaustion. Plenty of energy. I really enjoy it too. I especially like it when the dogs (out for their walks) come and say hello.

An added bonus...if I feel like a treat I can plan in a bit of extra exercise to cover the calories. Stops any feeling of guilt or failure. It actually helps me feel like I am managing things better.

It sounds like you've made a great start, cutting out the chippy and takeaways. I've started cycling, but won't go out if it's too hot. The plan is to cycle weather permitting and swimming otherwise.
 
I am 54 , too old to lift heavy weights lol
I am 60 and do weight exercises. I use small hand weights. Weight bearing exercise has been proved to stave off osteoporosis and to improve balance to avoid falls when we get more elderly. You can use a tin of beans in each hand to begin with - you don't even need proper weights.

Elastic bands you can buy from Amazon are also brilliant.

I didn't do any exercise for the first year or so after diagnosis - just concentrated on getting my food sorted out. Then I found exercise I enjoyed and now I exercise because I am having fun with it.

I bought a VR headset and climb onto my exercise bike and cycle through amazing scenery.
My current favourite is called HOLOFIT - you should have a look at that - it is like being on a Disney funfair type ride and before you know it you've cycled for 20 minutes.

My problems is making sure I don't over do it these days.

That looks wonderful , especially on those cold winter days

What bands would you suggest I get and can you suggest exercises with them ?
