I was told that I can eat anything I like (within reason) and the only thing to avoid is full sugar drinks except when used to treat hypos or before exercise.

In the last week or so I’ve eaten chocolate, Elton Mess (meringue, strawberries and cream), ice creams, etc. There’s no reason that you can’t eat what you want as long as you use your insulin correctly. Of course like anyone else you need to try to eat healthily but that doesn’t mean avoiding all sugar.

The thing is @Pumper_Sue if I eat the way I use to eat my sugar levels would be all over the place haha but I've found I can have the occasional item what I used to have here and there which is probably better off anyway as I used to eat way too much rubbish, but yes funnily enough i had a fresh cream eclair yesterday after dinner and they didnt really touch my sugar levels
Well ok make a few adjustments then 🙂

Do remember though that you are newly diagnosed so your pancreas will splutter stop, start then go on strike completely whilst you go through the honeymoon period.

Once the honeymoon is done and dusted things will settle down. Then it will be easier working out what doses when and where are needed.
If you look after your diabetes it will look after you 🙂

That's good then I've pretty much been avoiding sugar heavy items but no I know a bit more I'll start experimenting a bit more thanks @Inka

Yes that's true it's harder to find put what's bad and good when everything has a different affect on me everytime I eat it but like you said once the honeymoon period is over it will settle down, and thank you I will have a look at the site 🙂 @Pumper_Sue

Nature Valley protein bars are good, nut based and about 12g carb per bar. There are chocolate and salted caramel ones, but similar from Aldi are also good.

We are all different but I find the protein from protein bars significantly impacts my levels and I need to bolus for more than just the carb content.
Something else to experiment with 🙂

I have discovered M&S do salted Cashew nuts and they are every bit as good as KP if not slightly nicer !

@ILikeSugar :| one thing to remember is that we are all different.
What may send one Type 1's level's sky high may have little impact on another Type 1. And type 2 is a completely different condition.
We have all learnt to experiment and test. As you have a Libre, this should be relatively easy. If you want to know if the Nature Valley Protein bars will spike your levels, eat one and take a look at your graph. If your levels go high, you have learnt you will need to inject next time you eat one. If your levels don't change much, you can eat one another time without getting your insulin out.

I know it would be great to be told "you don't need insulin for this but you do for that" but we have different sensitivities, are different weights, do different levels of exercise, ... what we need insulin for and the level of insulin we need to take is what we need to keep our levels in range. And we are all different.

Members of the forum can suggest things. But when someone with type 2 says they can eat a packet of M&S cashews without it affecting their levels, all that means is it could be worth you experimenting with a packet of M&S cashew to find out if it will affect your levels. It does not mean you will definitely be able to eat it without having to inject.

You bet, like normal chocolate ice cream odd cake & biscuits, enjoy cream tea when on travels with wife. Being type 1 doesn't stop you from enjoying simple things in life like sweet treats.

Can this be true !!! Chocolate eclairs are ok? Why did I not know this. As it’s Friday I may give it a go, beats my sugar fee jelly… I’m starting to wobble

Yes although I did take insulin for it i havent tried it without yet but it didnt do much too much to my sugar levels at all, and who doesnt love a chocolate eclair eat away 🙂 @EmmaL76

I include all things in my diet, but over the years I have seen that some things are ‘higher risk’ than others in BG terms, and it will depend to some extent on how stroppy my diabetes is feeling at the time. Some times it’s perfectly happy to obey the rules, but other times higher risk items like cake, chocolate etc make it chuck its toys out of the pram and really start misbehaving.

And major BG upheaval for a slightly disappointing cake is no fair trade, so I eat them, and enjoy them, but I choose my moments, and reserve judgement on the likely enjoyment of the actual item 🙂
