Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
My partner (who is not diabetic) has been getting readings in the evening between 8.5 and 9.9. By morning the readings are back to normal, around 5. His father and brother both have type 2 and I was wondering if perhaps he is maybe starting to develop type 2 or is maybe just insulin resistant. His eyesight has worsened in the last couple of months, he has no other obvious symptoms. Am slightly confused myself as his bloods seem to right themselves. Am hoping to get him to GP soon......

Can anyone perhaps comment?

Many thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum!🙂 At what time are the readings being taken in the evening (i.e. how long after eating)? I don't think they'd be considered high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes - fasting would need to be over 7, and a glucose tolerance test would need to show over 11. You may, however, be correct in thinking that he has some level of insulin resistance. What kinds of food is he eating before you are taking the evening tests? I think non-diabetics can also get glucose 'spikes'. Has he seen an optician recently regarding his eyes? They're supposed to be able to spot possible diabetic changes.

Good idea to get him to the doctors for some tests! Hope it isn't what you think it is, but if it is, then much better to catch it as early as possible so treatment can begin.🙂

hi and a warm welcome i cant really add to what been said , but get to docs for tests sounds best idea

I would suggest seeing the GP if these readings are happening quite often. My partner is also having some highish readings similar to yours, not been able to pursuade a Dr's visit yet though.

In developing type 2 after eating control is the first to go. So the fasting readings can be normal several years after the post prandial levels are in diabetic range. So it would be usual for to have a glucose tolerence test as that would show up problems earlier than a fasting blood glucose test.

welcome to the forum 🙂
