Weight reduction

I notice that recipes are in partnership with Slimming World. I would be looking for recipes not aimed at weight loss. Do you have these? Actually, further, recipes suitable for batch cooking and freezing for later, low in saturated fats.

Welcome to the forum @jrs2

Many of the recipes that Diabetes UK offer are indeed aimed at people who would like to lose weight. Not all recipes on the DUK website are connected to Slimming World, some are developed internally as I understand it.

However there are forum members who are normal weight, or even underweight, and living with diabetes.

Hopefully some of those may be able to offer you some of their hints and tips?

Many follow a low carb approach which unless you make sure to replace the carbs with enough protein and healthy fats will usually result in weight loss which is what many need to do.
The recipes and meal plans in this link may be suitable for what you need however that will depend on what if any medication you take. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Welcome @jrs2. From your previous posts I understand you have been taking statins for some time. The statins have resulted in you becoming prediabetic. You do not want to lose any weight. Like me at diagnosis, you need to learn to cook your own meals. You are looking for an online cookery course and balanced weekly/monthly meal plans, designed to avoid waste of perishables, that will restore your glucose and cholesterol levels to normal.

What I suggest you do is:
  1. Go to this link to read a sample of the Caldesi's Reverse your diabetes cookbook. It's applicable to pre-diabetes and highly recommended by other members of this forum with rudimentary culinary skills (hope they will excuse the slur) who have used it to achieve remission.
  2. Scroll down to Jenny Phillips' article the Power of Food and see if it makes sense to you.
  3. If it does visit Jenny's website to explore the online consultations she offers.
  4. Otherwise let us know a bit more about your condition and what further advice you would like from us

Do you have a slow cooker? I throw chopped veggies, a tin of chopped tomatoes, and skinledd boneless chicken thighs or diced beef in mine. 6-8 hours later, 4-6 meals ready. Even easier, I use a pack of Waitrose soffrito mix so I dont even have to prepare the veggies.

Thanks - I see that "Reverse your Diabetes cookbook" introduces itself as "Lose weight and..." which is not my goal. I notice a website supercook.com which finds recipes for ingredients one actually has. Unfortunately although it filters for diets these do not include diabetes. An app that did would be useful.

I looked at this - scary! It seems that starting with such a diet causes one to feel as if one had flu. I would want to be under expert supervision, I think, in case it wasn't the diet.

That is a shame you found it scary because it really is a good approach and if one doesn't need to lose weight which is always the assumption for those with Type 2 then making sure you have plenty protein and healthy fats will help maintain your weight.
The feeling that SOME people may experience is partly due to dehydration when they change to low carb as carbs hang on to fluids in the system so drinking enough is important but by reducing carb intake gradually over a few weeks your body will get used to a lower carb intake. It is suggested people reduce their carb intake by a third for a couple of weeks then another third etc until they get to the suggested 130g per day which is what the Freshwell program is based on.
This is a way that many have found successful in reducing their HbA1C, the potential for side effects from that sound less of a problem that the stomach issues that some who start metformin get.
Any new regime has potential for some side effect.

Rather an exaggeration - I had been eating a diet sky high in carbs before diagnosis - all those 'healthy' starches - and I had a few episodes of feeling a bit wobbly so I had a drink of water and three grapes to counter the rapid decline in blood glucose I was experiencing.
It should be easy to find a way of eating which maintains or even increases weight - my strength has increased significantly since diagnosis as I have improved my muscles eating meat and fish, eggs, cheese - all the things I was advised to limit for so long.....

Those recipes are suitable for T2Ds whether they want to lose weight or not. Jenny Phillips' introductory article the Power of Food spells out that target 80g -130g of carbs in total per day are for weight maintenance, depending on your level of activity. That's one of the reasons I suggested you have a look at it.

A simple way to achieve your goals is to follow the Freshwell Meal Planner and its Green and Amber lists of foods. Then choose/adapt recipes that use ingredients you want to buy and have bought. It's basically what we do all the time, even at restaurants.

Do let us know what treasures you find.
