Hi there, I wonder if anyone could advise/help/reassure!

My husband was diagnosed Type 1 nearly two years ago (he's now 45 years old). He lost just over half a stone before he was diagnosed due to his levels that were running (albeit unknowingly!!!) very high and has never really been able to put it back on. He has a very slight build anyway and has recently lost even more weight.

His levels can be quite erratic with highs and lows and he has recently seen a dietician regarding carb counting.

I just wanted to ask how he could, if possible, try and gain some weight. He was very self-conscious in the summer with wearing certain t-shirts and is certainly aware of how slight he has become.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
🙂

If you're really worried about the weight loss see the doctor or the DSN and see what they advise. I hope you managed to get it sorted.

Hiya

If levels are up to any great degree this wont be helping with weight loss imo.

Carb counting sorted out Rob's highs. Now we consider a 12 too high where as once upon a time it was a lot more than that!

Have you found the carb counting helpful? Do you have any ratios in place for the different mealtimes? Sounds like not if levels are erratic?

I would advise writing everything down that goes in including insulin. Test before meals & after and trying to find a pattern so you can work out ratios.

How does he treat hypos? The 15 min rule can stop any rebound highs. Over treating a hypo is a bu**er for those :(

I'm sure others will be along with other thoughts 🙂

Hi Sarah - thanks for your reply.

We've only been carb counting for about three weeks and the ratio he is using is 1 unit to 10g of carbs - this may change once we've been back to see the dietician with his food diary etc.

He treats hypos with a small can of coke and then a scone or sandwich, depending on how low the low is, if you know what I mean! What did you mean about the 15 minute rule - I've not heard of that.

This is all very much a minefield, even after 2 years!

🙂

15 min rule is 15 grams of fast acting carb (mini can of coke is ideal if very low) or 3 jelly babies then wait 15mins. Then re test if levels not back up in the 4's by then then take some more fast acting carb.

We don't follow up with anything but that's mainly due to the fact we can "tell" why Rob has had the hypo. i.e. a 2/2:30pm hypo is down to not quite getting lunch carbs right & or exercise done since lunch. If it's due to strenuous exercise then something extra may be required.

It's taken us nearly 18 months to get it right and the hba to drop from 8.x% to the 6.3% it is now. Rob has been diabetic for 30+ years.
It's hard work but worth it in the end.

Has your hubby seen a dsn recently? Had a Hba done ???

Sarah 🙂

I think the 15 minute rule is generally what we do ('ish!!) Its good to see that you have both sussed it and got Rob's Hba down. We saw the DSN earlier this month but she was reluctant to change anything as we are due to see the consultant next week. His last Hba was 9.4 so not good :(

Hopefully after we see the consultant things will become a bit more clearer

🙂

Hope it goes well with the consultant.

Sometimes I do wonder what goes on in some of the dsn's minds 9.4 and reluctant to change things
We were in a similar situation when down to 7.x% but pushed to see the DSN at the hosp rather than GPs. She was fantastic and really helped.

Have you got the Ragnar Hanas book btw? It has become our bible handy to dip in and out of.
Don't be put off by the title it's aimed at all type 1's 🙂

Once again hope it goes ok next week.
