Type 2
hi, new to the forum.
I am male, 43, diagnosed type 2 for 3 years. Recently i have been losing weight like i first did before diagnosis. I havent changed any eating habits or routine etc. I take 160mg gliclazide twice a day and 850mg metmorfin three times a day at meal times.
I am very uncomfortable about this and desperate to put the weight back on. I am 6'1" and 13.5 stone. Although the doctor tells me i am fine i still feel totally ill at ease.

Have any you got any tips on what i can do or what sorts of food i should be eating in order to get myself back up to the 15 stone i feel comfortable at.

thanks in advance. jon

Hi Jon and welcome to the forum. Losing weight without trying is bound to be worrying. Do you have access to a meter where you can test your blood sugar - its possible that your levels have been creeping up, so your body is not making as much use of you calorie intake as it was (if you see what I mean).

Id that all seems normal the can I ask does your Dr know that you are worried about the weight loss - you could always ask him/her to run some blood tests to rule out any other causes - that might help put your mind at rest.

Hi jon, welcome to the forum 🙂 What are your blood sugar levels like - do you have a meter to test them? Having consistently high levels can lead to weight loss in some people because your body is unable to use the glucose in your blood and it gets passed in your urine. At the same time, your body begins to burn fat which produces a by-product called ketones. Has your doctor tested you for these? Unexplained weight loss (i.e. you are eating enough for your activity levels) needs investigating. How long have you been worried you wer losing weight and what do you feel would be your ideal weight?

Sorry for all the questions! 🙂

Hi John, weight loss when you are not trying is a worry. Have you been more active? That would affect how much weight you are loosing. Has the heat affected your appetite? That would also contribute to your weight loss.

If your glucose levels are under control and there is no obvious to you reasn why the wieght is comming off see your doctor to see if there are any other possible causes. It will be reassurance for you too.

hi Margie, yes i told my doctor last week but he said i was fine and he didnt want me to put any weight on. I was told last year after my last yearly hospital screening that i no longer had to test my blood. Maybe this was to save NHS on price of testing strips!
I have always had regular (6mthly) blood tests done at either the doctors or the hospital but i am told if i dont hear anything than i have nothing to worry about. Really dont know what to do.

I think I would go back to the Dr and say - if you were losing weight for no reason would you be concerned ? (maybe there is another Dr at the practice you could talk to). It could be down to your blood sugar levels or something else but the Dr shouldn't just be ignoring it and should be trying to establish the cause.

Welcome Jon.
Although BMI is a very crude measure, it is still worth considering.
At height 6ft 1in and 13stones & 7lbs, your BMI is 24.93, just within the healthy range for an adult of 20 - 25.
At height 6ft 1in and 15stones, your BMI is 27.73, virtually in the middle of the overweight range 25 - 30.

So, why would you want to increase your weight from healthy to unhealthy?

However, it's obviously bothering you, so ask your GP again, and meanwhile monitor your weight, say once a week.

Jon, do you drive? If so then your doctor should be providing you with blood testing strips as you are on gliclizide which can cause low blood sugars - you therefore need to test that your levels are OK before driving, and also during driving if a long journey. If you don't do this then you are potentially breaking the law. Are you aware if you have a low blood sugar i.e. do you get any symptoms of sweating, feeling shaky and/or disorientated? Even if you don't drive you should have the means to test if you are on gliclizide, and this would also allow you to test to see if your levels are high - go back to your doctor, or a different one who is aware of the need to test on this medication!
