hi everione on tuesday i went to the mother and baby group at the local hospital (bexhill on sea )not the conquest in hastings hoping to have a few free bits and the session was about weaning and after a few minutes the nurse said"if you start your baby on solids before 6 months is more likely to be over weight and have diabetes "i was fuming so at the end of the session i spoke to her telling that she shouldnot have said that because is not proved and in the booklet given to us (start 4 life )was talking about t2 and not t1 so next time she should read the booklet more careful and do her homework better and she said that a lots of people dont know about t1 and t2 so it want make any difference then i reply is because they dont know and they should know the difference this is why people think that diabetes t1 is given from junk food and is more likely that children are bullied ( adult as well ) this is how nhs staff is trained they cannot even read litterature about food properly i am sure some of the new mum on the forum have the booklet (introducing solid food -start4life)

Shocking, glad your voiced your opinion, which I agree with...............some babies just need solids earlier, there is no hard and fast rule.......

Good job.............:D

My big boy (now almost 26) was being weaned before his six months old. He MIGHT get diabetes because he has an uncle, a grandparent and a prent all with diabetes. My brther weaned before he was 6 months MIGHT get diabetes because he has an uncle, a parent and a sister all with diabetes...

Actually early weaning does put a baby at slightly greater risk of Type 1 diabetes ...early exposure to Cow's milk is also though to be a possible trigger for T1 ....

"Infant diet. The development of autoimmune type-1 diabetes involves complex interactions among several genes and environmental agents. Human type-1diabetics show an unusually high frequency of wheat gluten-sensitivity. Gluten is closely linked with the autoimmune attack in the pancreas and is strongly associated with pancreatic islet inflammation and damage.[4] Thus early weaning to a diet which contains a gluten-containing cereal such as wheat, barley, rye or oats is likely to increase the risk of type-1 diabetes.[5] To avoid that risk, such foods should not be used before at least 6 months of age. And, even then they should be introduced slowly, if at all. "

graham is lactose intollerant since he was 18 months but i dont think is because of his early weaning and how many babies started before 6 months without diabetes?

I have known a few children who were lactose intolerant and it was a while before it was picked up.

Hi, you did right to pull her up, we can do without ignorance surrounding childhood diabetes being reinforced by certain health care professionals. They ought to know better ! 😡

As far as I was aware they still don't know for certain what pre disposes a child to T1.

As to weaning, milk alone is not enough for some babies, all are individuals with different needs and growth rates, you know when your baby is ready. No wonder parents lack confidence in their own instincts these days! It is easy to avoid glutens though til over six months and this was the advice back when my eldest was a baby. They also reccommended then to wean between 4 - 6 months or you miss a "window of opportunity" in their development and would delay their speech!

How annoying isnt it!! Well done on voiced back to them... I have 4 kids, all 3 older are healthy then Carly was dx type 1 at 23 months old and they were all weaned before 6 months old so I dont believe this rubbish 🙂

I'm glad you said something...

I've heard so many theories to what pre-disposes an individual to diabetes, that in truth no-body knows whether it's one or many factors...

Some say it's a lack of Vit D in the mother (so how come I'm a twin, belong to a family of 9 children and I'm the only diabetic)

Again some say it's enviromental factors, foods, weening etc see my reply above..

As to this malarky about not weening before 6 months old, I wonder how many babies suffer like my step grandson did? At 3 months he started to show the first signs of weening, his milk only statified for a an hour or so, and he be crying for a feed... But the health visitor said nope you can't start weening until at least 6 months! So they increased his milk, he started to throw up frquently..

We the grandparents said he's needs to start weening, milk wasn't statifying him, the amount of milk being given was too much hence he throw it back up! NO said the health visitor you can't start weening he's not 6 month old, there must be something else wrong with him, so at 4 months old the poor thing spent a week in hospital for a battery of tests! which all proved non-conclusive no reasons for constant sickness!

We again said it's because he needs weening.. NO NO NO said the health visitor etc etc.. So little Jamie spent day and night crying for more, then being sick and not thriving at all... My stepson and his partner were beside themselves, stressed out near to breaking point..

Then at 5 months, my step-sons partner mum took matter into her own hands, while she looked after little Jamie for a couple of days (just to give them break) She started the weening process with a little bit of ground rice to his bottle.. Jamie fed then curddle, smiling then dropped off to sleep for a couple of hours.. Didn't wake up screaming and slept the night though..

Problem solved, poor bugger was so hungry Jamie went home to mum and dad, Nanny admitted what she done but when my step-son and his partner realised how contented and happy their son was, they keep the weening process up, slowly with each stage...

Oh and the health visitor, well she flipped her lid so my step-son just about managed to say 'on your bike' as politely has he could..

Yes Jamie might get diabetes, who knows his grandad is T1!

And my advice to new mothers, the weening process starts when your baby says so, they will let you know when they want/ready to start excepting solids and if they are only 3 or 4 months old, then the slower you introduce them as you go..

Poor Jamie, that's horrible.😱

Carol and Fiona both were weaned at around 4 months, which is what we were told is the right time.
Fiona actually started drinking proper milk at 11 months, but Carol had Formula until about 13 months. Who is diabetic??
