Hi all,

Last night when i checked on Alex he was 2.5mmols at 11pm. This is unusual for him - the only thing that was different was that he begged me for a carton of apple juice with his evening meal, so i said yes and we covered it by insulin. I am guessing that they 'missed' each other and this is what caused the low later on? Any ideas? This is the first time i have let him have something like this so it seems to be the culprit!?🙂Bev

Hmmm...you do post some challenges don't you bev?🙂 I would have thought that, if the juice was taken with the evening meal then the 'glycaemic load' principle would come into effect - i.e. the presence of the other food in the stomach would have slowed the digestion of the juice. What was the meal? What would you normally expect him to be at 11 pm? 2.5 is low - did he have any symptoms? Of course, it can be such a hit and miss thing this pesky diabetes, there may have been many other factors coming into play as you know! Personally, I do not think that the juice taken with a meal would have this effect, but if taken in isolation and covered by insulin later, then I would imagine it's a distinct possibility that the two could 'miss' or maybe too much insulin given for the juice.

I'm rambling now, so I'll stop!🙂

Hi Northerner,
The meal was a lasagne with a low fat yoghurt for pudding! He is normally high at this time of night- 11 or 12ish due to the ongoing battle with night time highs! He did nothing unusual yesterday apart from the drink! 🙂Bev

That's a considerable dip then! What time did he have his levemir? I have had a couple of occasions when my blood sugar has plummeted about an hour after taking my lantus for no apparent reason - maybe this episode was similar and the juice was just a coincidence? Something to note and remember for the next time he has this food combination, to watch out and see if the effects are similar.
