Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last May, not medicated, until then I nearly always skipped breakfast. One of the first changes I made was to include breakfast and now feel unwell if I skip breakfast. I have also noticed that sometimes I wake up really hungry and was wondering if this is something other people experience.

If I wake in the night, or if I stay up late I will be so hungry in the morning. Not sure if that's the same thing as yourself.

I am always starving as soon as my feet hit the floor, be it 5am or 10am. I can’t function before I have breakfast. Do you test your blood glucose? I’m sort of guessing you maybe don’t ( forgive me for my assumption if you do) before being re diagonosed as type 1 and starting insulin, my BGs were often very high first thing, this can make you feel very hungry as conversely can really low blood sugars, (as you aren’t medicated that probably won’t be the case). It could be that dawn phenomenon is at play here and your waking levels are high, hence the hunger. Don’t worry about it and just feed the beast, diabetic friendly food of course! 🙂

Hypos aside, I haven’t felt hungry since 1996. Weird, I know, but I don’t think that’s the diabetes, because I developed ulcerative colitis almost simultaneously, which is a great appetite suppressant, and that seems to have stuck.

Doesn’t suppress greed, mind, which is a different thing entirely🙂

You were right I don't test at the moment, I am just happy to hear it isn't just me. Just taking a bit of getting used to as I never used to eat breakfast at all and had to really force myself to start. To go from one extreme to the other surprised me.
