Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi, my name is Steve, I live and work in East Anglia, and I've recently been diagnosed as pre-diabetic with a HB1AC blood test of 6.3 Now, that meant diddley-squat to me, I know nothing about diabetes, apart from the fact that it's a 'bad thing' and I definitely don't want to progress to full Type 2 diabetes.
I went to the quack because I as feeling pretty ropey, very tired much of the time, thirsty at night with a dry mouth, and very painful sore feet..... Of course the medic sent me for blood tests, and a week later I got a letter to inform me that I have pre-diabetes, and I need to make an immediate appointment to see the practice diabetes nurse.
It's a wake up call for sure. I'm 5ft 10ins tall, and on the day of my appointment I weighed a stately 295 lbs. My blood pressure is also high, and my general fitness level is pretty poor...even for a 62 year old man.........Then the Diabetes Nurse explained what Type 2 diabetes actually is, and went through the list of possible (and likely) complications that could develop unless I do something about it.
So I'm on a weight loss regime, low carb combined with Intermittant Fasting, and things are improving. Down 25 pounds, and four inches off my waistline, but there's a long way to go.
Today I weigh 270 pounds.
Next goal is 250 by Christmas, then 220 by my birthday in May.
And I want to see my HB1AC reading in my next blood test in November to be under 6.0
Small steps to be sure.....but oh so necessary.
Wish me luck!

Hiya - sounds like a sensible nurse all in all and that you are doing the right things.

Did she tell you anything about monitoring you own BG at home so you (and she) can see if it is following your weight, downwards?

Hello @conundrum welcome to the forum 🙂. Glad you have listened to a bit of advice and taken steps to control your situation, read as much as you can especially about food intake and take note from the more experienced members e.g. Jenny aka Trophywench.

I've bought a Codefree blood glucose meter, and I test myself once a week....today's reading, for instance was 5.6

Hello @conundrum , welcome to the forum. Your doing well ! I agree with Jenny about your nurse, it really is a pleasure to hear such good advice being given.
Many here use self testing to find out how the various carbohydrates affect us so we can make informed food choices as we’re all different in this respect , ie some can eat porridge while others need to avoid it like the plague as it shoots up their bg (blood glucose) levels and unless we test we wouldn’t know this
Have a read of this blog to see how it works.

Hi Steve, welcome, I’m also from East Anglia 🙂 Sounds like you are making all the right moves with diet and checking your bg, congratulations on the weight loss, good luck with your targets :D

Welcome Steve.
Good to hear that you have good support and how well you have done already. The steady steps that you have set yourself sound very sensible. Well done and keep in touch with any questions that you have.

Hello from another East Anglian dweller 🙂

Sounds like you’re doing great @conundrum.😛 Welcome to the gang!:D

HI, just been told I am pre-diabetic, with an HBA1C of 42, just started on the Blood Sugar Diet in the hope I can reverse the process. But struggling a bit.

Hi @ellesea, sorry to hear you are struggling :( it might be worth you starting a new thread so more people get to respond to you?
