Hi all, diagnosed with T2 in February, I seem to be getting every ' bug' around, not been well since having my covid/flu jab a month ago, it's cold after cold.I feel quite rundown, can anyone recommend a multi vitamin that is safe for diabetics please? I have been told that not all are, many thanks in advance Sue x

How is your diabetes management? Do you test your BG levels yourself at home and if so, what sort of levels are you seeing on your meter. The reason I ask is that high BG levels will make it harder for your body to fight infections and these things dragging on can be a red flag that your diabetes may no be as well managed as you might hope.

I have had a spell recently of my skin being dry and cracked and getting cold sores and wicklows etc, so I came to the conclusion that I needed a vitamin supplement. I bought dissolvable tablet type multivitamin from Lidl and things seem to be improving and no obvious impact on my BG levels but always best to test how your own body responds to anything new by testing yourself.

I use the Multibionta or Centrum vitamins and minerals @Sunnyside3049

Best wishes for a speedy recovery @Sunnyside3049

I just use supermarket own-brand ones too.

Make sure you keep your diet nice and varied, with plenty of unprocessed (or minimally processed) foods, and lots of veggies of different colours.

Sometimes various bits of the multivits can just go straight through and can’t be absorbed in the quantities supplied, and you just end up with very expensive wee!

We use ASDA multivitamins as the tablets are small whereas some are the size of suppositories (not sure which end they go). Sorry TMI
I feel like that about my 1000mg metformin tablets. Huge and definitely need to be taken with water

I take H&B multivitamins in winter usually if I feel a bit run down after colds etc but mainly try and stay well hydrated with hot lemon and ginger. It feels like it'd doing me good.

Diabetes can impact your immune system. You should get your vitamin levels checked. I got very sick other people got a snivel I got full on flu.

It appears that my vitamin B12 levels were low. My Vitamin D was low, I avoid sunshine due to skin cancer concerns. Apparently, many in the UK have low D levels. I avoid fruit because of high sugars, I try to get green veggies but not enough. So I now take immune system boosting supplements: B12, D3 and C. It turns out prolonged taking of Metformin can inhibit the absorption of B12.

Dr Michael Mosley was big into boosting your microbiome and suggested foods like kefir and fermented foods like sauerkraut and natural cheeses. It turns out the process of making kefir removes the sugar from full fat milk leaving just probiotics and nutrients. I drink just 50g home made kefir per day. And the process of making sauerkraut removes the sugars from veggies leaving healthy microbiome probiotics.

I am a lot less sick now.

Good luck.

Metformin can affect the ability of the body to absorb vit B12 so people will usually need injections as the oral route does not help.
Following a sensible regime reducing carbs but a low carb approach is not NO carb.

B12 supplements worked for me. My doctor did underline Leadinglights comment and said that the supplement may not be enough and that I might need injections. When he retested my levels they have been adequate. That was 12 years ago in 2012 and levels still good. PS the doctor also told me to stop being a vegetarian which I did. This may also have had an impact on my numbers.
