So, I had my second appointment with my coeliac consultant (was diagnosed with this in jan) and bloods have come back to show that I am severely deficient in vitamin D (severely being they couldn?t even find a trace of it at all) and me being me have researched and looked it up on internet and I have found evidence to suggest this could be a cause of diabetes and other auto immune conditions. Not sure if I have ever had my vitamin d levels checked and don?t even know if my diabetes consultant has ever checked them. But this has now just got me thinking that this may be what could have caused diabetes with me.
Has anyone else had experience of this??
I have got my next appointment with my diabetes team on Monday so I will ask them more about it. I am just a bit inquisitive to see if anyone else has found themselves in the same boat as me?

Not sure if you seen this but it's an interesting read www.diabetesandenvironment.org/home/incidence

As you can see from here, perhaps their is a link, but without knowing whether you lacked Vit D, pre-diabetes it would be difficult to say if it played a part or not..

Interestingly, there's a lot of people who believe that we should be taking high levels of Vit D, just in case or because we've got diabetes.. With the latter tis a bit like bolting the door after the horse has bolted!

But in my case I suspect a lack of Vit D was the cause of my T1, as I'm the only one in a large family, with a twin sister who was brought up by a mum, who didn't like being indoors so we spent most of our time out of school being taking for hikes across the hills or down to the beach etc...

i pretty much live outside, i was brought up around farms and have always been an outside person, i am really not one to sit inside as my doctor suggested.
the more i read about it the more it seems to make sence. like you it doesn't run in my family and seems to be no other reason why i would have got diabetes i am know for never getting ill.

i am going to see if they have done a test for vit d when i first got diagnosed when i see my doc on monday.

........

Ditto.

As I understand it, lack of vit D is implicated in a whole big bag of issues ( as is another common issue with coeliacs - lack of B12).

Aside from neuro issues, lack of Vit D leads to an inability to absorb calcium which can lead to osteopenia & osteoporosis ( have you had a DEXA scan of any of your poor bones ? )

Hope Monday goes well

Hi

Yes I have the same issue with a vitamin deficiency.
On whatever scale they use (I think they can vary) mine came back at 27 when it should have been 100. This was after 3 months on vitamin D at 2000IU. I now have had my vitamin dose raised to 6000iu and will be tested again next week. If this doesn't work I think they said an injection would be needed.😱

my doctor doesn't talk in the same units as yours lucy, but all mine said was that they couldn't find a trace of it at all, a little worrying!! but all other levels seem normal.

bolddog, well i am not seeing them again for a year and would seem i am not even going to get a blood test to see if my levels come up at all, let allown having a DEXA scan!!! fustrating to say the least!! as its not just vit D i am lacking i have coeliac disease and type 1 all have been diagnosed within a year of each other so i am a little bit worried and there lack of concern!!

i am hoping my diabetes team are going to do something about it tomorrow when i see them!!!
