Relationship to Diabetes

I'll stick to the basics for now as I haven't been on here for a while. I'm Laura, I am 25 and Mummy to my beautiful 2.5 year old, Imogen. I have been T1 diabetic for nearly 9.5 years and use Tresiba and Novorapid.

Basically, the last two days my left eye has been very watery and uncomfortable. I stupidly Googles the symptoms and it is coming back with eye diseases etc. I already have backround retinopathy but I don't sleep well so I am REALLY hoping the watery eye is just because of a lack of sleep. I keep waking myself up with my right eye closed to see that I can still see from my left eye. My control is very poor and I really do struggle.

I guess I am just looking for some peace of mind that I won't wake up tomorrow with no sight in my left eye?! I can't sleep tonight for fear and worry

Sorry to start with such a dreary post but I really am so scared

Aw Laura, I am so sorry to hear you are having this problem :( To me (and I am not a doctor!) it sounds like your tear duct may be blocked due to maybe dehydration of lack of sleep, it doesn't sound diabetes related. But you should get things checked out with your doctor or optician. For the symptoms to appear so rapidly I would imagine it's more likely to be an infection or something.

it could be a number of things hun. but i doubt a eye disease especially when you only have background retinopithy. i have this also. type 1 for 17 years xx sounds like a bit of a sinus blockage or a small allergy to something or like admin up there says a blocked tear duct. if you are concerned hun pop in and see the pharmacist...failing that just go straight and see a doc 🙂 much love xxxx

I am SO glad you said that. It made me sigh a huge sigh of relief! I have asked on another Diabetes forum and they're suggesting going to A&E! It seems to be more the outer corner of my eye more.

I am probably just being stupid but like I said, I don't want to wake up with sight to only one eye which is probably highly unlikely as I am sure these things can take years to worsen (I hope anyway!)

I am a bit sniffly so wonder if that can be causing it? I've been sneezing alot which only indicates a cold to me.

Its all connected you eyes ears and nose..so yes that has got to be it hun. i know were told not to take epehedrine as it closes small blood vessels and that can be unhelpful to diabetics but that can help. things like sudafed or beechams should knock that watery eye right away xx

Get yourself to a doctor, always better safe than sorry! I have had similar myself when I have a cold, so I hope it is something that clears up soon 🙂

How is Imogen doing? 🙂

I really hope so. I feel sick with worry sometimes when it comes to diabetes :(

She's very well thank you. Chattering away and is now at nursery 3 hours a day, 3 days a week. If I can figure how to, I will share a picture. Can't believe she is now 2.5! She's such a beautiful little girl. I'm so lucky. She really is my entire world 🙂

I get the watery eye thingy quite often, sometimes for weeks at a time. It always goes away. Nothing to do with retinopathy, just blocked tear ducts. Do get reassurance from your doc or optician to be sure, but meanwhile you can stop panicking. 🙂

I will try and get a GP appointment in the morning. My doctors are usually very good for appointments and I've never had an issue with them. Hopefully now I can turn my brain off and get some sleep though I doubt it lol

Thank you for all your kind words of reassurance.

I knew we have tear ducts in the corner next to the nose but am I now right in thinking we have them at the other end too??

Lovely to hear 🙂 Are you in touch with Louise, also the mum of Imogen, born around the same time?

Yes I have her as a friend on Facebook 🙂

Yeah it's nice and also that we have the diabetes in common aswell.

Anyway, I think I am going to try and get some sleep. All this worrying has made me tired lol. I'll pop back on tomorrow and update on the teary eye lol. Night night 🙂

OK perhaps not. My BG has dropped 14 points in just over 1 hour with 8 or so units still working! Hypo destined I think

Welcome to the forum Laura 🙂
I'd start by going to the pharmacy and having a chat with the pharmacist (and I'd personally milk the whole "I am a type 1 diabetic thing" )
I know it's very tempting but stay away from google - it will just do your head in and make you worry more. There is so much rubbish on the net - if you REALLY want to find info then I'd just stick to the NHS websites.... At least that's evidence based information
Good luck !
