Very surprising eye news

Ive been told for four years that there is nothing that can be done to the macula damage in my left eye -it's cystoid macula odem due to a retinal vein occlusion. However, although there is no guarantee due to the damage being long- term, I've been told that there is a chance that they might be able to restore the sight through a series of eye injections - one a month for 5-6months on the NHS. This could potentially mean I could read again without special equipment and possibly feel safe driving. As I said nothing guaranteed but I wasn't expecting this news🙂

This sounds really promising Amanda, fingers crossed for you.

According to a talk our local DUK had from an opthalmic surgeon last year they're making huge advances in his area and becoming able to improve the outlook (pun intended) for all sorts of folk who couldn't be helped at all just a couple of years ago.

I hate the thought of injections there, but most certainly hate the thought of losing my eyesight, a great deal more.

Thanks everyone. I was in complete shock when he told me and kept saying "I'm a wimp" interspersed with "but you kept telling me before that nothing could be done". He is a great eye doctor and I trust him completely and he explained that it is only recently that the treatment has become available on the NHS.. However I am extremely apprehensive about having an injection put in my eye - last time they tried putting in a cannula I screamed and they had to rearrange it to a general anaesthetic. I'm thinking about seeing my GP about advice/medication to calm me down for when it is done.
