This is so sad and so familiar to me as these are the symptoms my K had a year before she was Dx but somehow recovered without medical intervention and we thought it was a virus/bug at the time - not so sure now

I feel it is important to raise awareness of symptoms but also parents and doctors need to know that you don't have to have them all

This tragic story mirrors just what happened to me too - I know I am very lucky to have survived. I never for one moment suspected that I had diabetes or that what I had was potentially life-threatening. Very sad

Oh what a terrible thing to happen. I just can't stop thinking about her poor family. I think that the post on the end of this report is right and that a finger prick should be routine for anyone who feels at least one of the symptoms of diabetes. It is a really crappy and horrid disease but what makes me even more sad is that it is so controllable or treatable and look at what happened for the lack of one simple test. I am hoping so much that many people see this news report and that they will think about it if ever they know someone who is ill.

Gosh so sad - so similar to Millie being diagnosed brings back traumatic memories, GPs saying viral, "good she is drinking plenty", such a simple test and wish I had been so much more assertive/aggressive! After only a few days she rapidly deteriorated, we got to hospital and they hooked her up to glucose 😱 Due to laboured breathing they thought pneumonia, chest x ray (nok) then they thought meningitis due to rash, some of which non blanching, as getting prepped for lumbar puncture bloods came back. So eventually dx, off the glucose, we were told to expect the worse that night or even brain damage as had to re -hydrate her quick which put her at risk of water on the brain. So relieved she pulled through and was up and eating by the following evening! Remarkable how quickly the insulin got to work and thank the good Lord 🙂

I just hope that people of all ages can get diagnosed quicker and lives are saved!

That is sad. So many doctors fail to recognise the symptoms of something that seems to be on the increase. I hope this tragedy raises awareness and helps others get diagnosed and lead more normal (as far as possible normal) lives.

So sad, My condolences to the family. I was in a similar situation with the anaemia, in 3 days I went from perfectly healthy to being unable to get out of bed. When I got to hospital, the doctor rather nonchalantly informed me that one more day and I would have been dead. 😱

ohmygod, I am welling up at that story. Such a tragedy and so devastating.

Sad thing is, even from the details in that story, I wouldn't have said she needed testing for diabetes maybe they just need to test as routine....

my thoughts go out to her family and loved ones.

I went exactly the same way, It just brings home how serious diabetes is.

it really remind me about graham diagnosis if i would not insisting to have test for diabetes he would be dead as well ( and they have taken their time anyway with the urine when a fingerprick is so quick)

The tragedy of this poor child is that a finger prick is so simple & quick. My heart goes out to her family they must be heartbroken. x
