Verrucas

Hi all!
Riley has got 2 verrucas (got to love the swimming baths eh?!) I was just looking online for a gel to put on them and when I read the blurb it says not suitable for diabetics. Can anyone give me any alternatives I could use please? X

You'll find that many products, especially for feet, say "not suitable for diabetics". Best to ask a pharmacist for avice about treatment you can buy over the counter. Or ask GP for advice / prescription.

You are probably better speaking to a GP or ask for a referral to a podiatry clinic. The pharmacists in my own area seem all of a sudden to have been stricken with the 'it's more than my jobs worth syndrome'. They now won't even offer me Bob Martin worming tablets for fear I might take them myself. I haven't even got worms, the silly individuals

I would say you're probably fine to use these.

Medical products always assume that if you have diabetes, you are completely uncontrolled and have every complication going.

I suspect the product you've got has some kind of weak acid for melting away the verruca. A person with poorly controlled diabetes with peripheral neuropathy probably shouldn't use this product in the unlikely even that the acid happened to somehow be far stronger than it was supposed to be and burn through a foot and that person not feel it.

I would think your son would be fine!

I have used the products for verrucas (which I now get and had never had before Diabetes). It is likely that the pharmacist won't give you any if you ask for advice. The GP will be a good bet if they can offer something on prescription, or as suggested a referral to podiatrist.

Whenever I need a relatively simple product from the pharmacy I send my partner and he denies any knowledge of me being diabetic if asked....if he doesn't in order to safeguard themselves the pharmacists say that I need to see a GP and it can take ages for an appointment to treat something simple. I'm not recommending our approach but I've managed 45 years of diabetes, since I was two, without it causing a problem.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I will phone the GP and get an appointment for our own peace of mind. I already worry about his feet without tempting fate! X

Better safe than sorry, but I imagine your GP will say it's fine. I have trouble believing a child with recently diagnosed T1 will have poor circulation!

The duct tape approach sounds interesting if you want to play it very safe. Alternatively (although I get this might not be an option) you could just leave it, they do eventually clear up on their own.

Thank you Deus. I was tempted to try the duct tape method actually but purely out of intrigue haha
