USA and Lantus

I agree, giving up any idea of two hour changes! How wonderful to be there for the solar eclipse though very hot. Weather will be wonderful I think. So how did you manage your basal?
I tend to find that hot weather reduces my insulin requirements, but like all things D-related it's not very predictable. It's a bit easier to handle with the pump, as basal changes are a bit more reactive compared to lantus. For me lantus changes could take days to work through my system. With the pump, I start off by creating a new basal profile with an across-the-board 10% reduction, and then work from there. A regime of test and correct is needed for the first few days. I'm also helped by CGM with the Medtronic pump. If you have a Libre, that would do the trick as well.

As you probably know, American food tends to be very carby - especially when you're in the boonies - which doesn't help either. But don't let all this affect your enjoyment, just have fun!

Thanks for this, it will still be hot but not as hot as when you were there. I expect my need for bolus will go down so will be careful.. I will be testing and grateful for Libre, luckily I will be able to eat low carb food as can cook, will be going to Wholefoods and reading carb content of loads of food! Eating out could be difficult but as you say I will have fun and can't wait till everything is done and I am on the plane! Adventure time.

Ive never understood the 'take half a dose to last you 12 hours' approach. Surely basal doesn't work like that. Half a dose means half the amount of insulin, but active in your system for 24 hrs. So if you then take your full dose 12 hrs later, you've got one full dose and half a dose both active at the same time for the next 12 hours after that.
When I decided to experiment with taking Lantus in the evening instead of the morning, I just winged it like Mike, and covered the gap with extra short acting.
I totally agree with that as the way the different molecules brake down should be linear so what you are doing is just half a firefight for 12 hours then overwhelming your system for the next 24 hours causing a high chance of hypoglycaemia

My advice would be to allow your self a buffer while your away so change the time of your usual dose to a convenient time after you usually take it and sort the highs in between times then on the way back do the same.

Looks pretty barren in Colorado doesn't it ~ knowledge and confidence is the key to managing your Diabetes whilst you're working there NJ ~ you can do it ~ you will do it. xx

Last October we flew to New Zealand for a month in a camper van. We left Birmingham for Dubai at 20.30 and I did my Lantus shot at 23.00. Dubai to Auckland the next day, one hop not recommended, just fire fight thro the flight (16 hours) with Humalg. Arrived in Auckland at midday local time and again fire fight till 22.00 my Lantus time. Woke up just fine, readings a bit wobbly but so much to see and do and eat. Back to normal within two days. Coming home, this time Auckland, Melbourne, Dubai and Birmingham one shot of Lantus and Humalog every meal time.

this is another good way of doing it if you only rest for a few hours on the plane and it is a non stop over or you would have to do it twice

Through security with no trouble, my sensor was not a problem, no one asked to see my doctors letter, all easy. May this be the tone for all my trip!

Have a wonderful time!!
