Been to see DSN to discuss my results from last week’s blood tests. HbA1c 49 up from 47 but that’s fine as since my DAFNE course I have hardly had any hypos. I only got the results in the post today literally about half an hour before I left for my appointment so only glanced at other results. She said there was an anomaly with urea test and needs me to go back in three weeks for full bloods. Of course I only thought of the questions when I got home. I looked at results and kidney results where shown as <2. That looks normal as it says under 3 is low risk. Any ideas anyone?

Well, Eggy, there are at least 20 possible causes of a raised urea, but in the absence of abnormal creatinine levels, that cuts out the serious ones. You can get a raised urea in a high protein diet, or even after eating a steak. A touch of dehydration can cause it, as can physical stress or exertion. Don’t go for any long walks before your next test. And drink plenty of water.🙂

Thanks Mike, I did consult Dr Google and dehydration was mentioned, I do eat a lot of protein as I obviously try and eat low carb. Can’t win! My next test is 2 days after I return from Greece where no doubt I will be eating lots of protein and walking and probably getting dehydrated because of the heat! To be fair I do drink a lot more water on holiday than I do at home. Hoping its just a blip. 🙂
