It is my husband who is a type 2 and was diagnosed a year ago. He was put on metformin and then januvia in december. He is also on sitagliptin and rosuvastatin for cholesterol. Since january he has had almost weekly episodes of upset stomach. It always happens the same way - firstly incredibly foul smelling burping (like rotten eggs) followed a few hours later by terrible pains and gurgling in his stomach and finally diarrhoea and then he is fine.
He has been to the dr's and they 'don't know - it may be a recurring virus' but I was wondering if anyone else had ever had these symptoms and if they could be his medication?

I had something very similar with the metformin, it is one of the side effects. Read the leaflett that comes with the medication and see what that says. If it is too uncomfortable or un pleasent go back to the doctors.

Once my system got used to the pills my stomach went back to normal. Your husband might have a virus as doctor suggests, but do read the leaflets withthe tablets and if you are still unhappy go back. It may need a change of pill. It took a couple of attempts before I got the right blood pressure tablets.
 
it's well known as caroline says to get GI side effects, if they continue to cause problems there is a modified release metformin which can lessen these effects in most people.
 
Hi! After I was diagnosed last May I was put on 11 different drugs. Prior to that I took nothing more than maybe a dozen paracetomols a year (not all at once!). For the following six months I was back and forth to the GPs because I was suffering awful side effects - mostly nausea, which was causing me to lose weight as I had absolutely no appetite.

Thankfully, I'm fine now. We discovered that there were one or two culprits (ramipril, beta-blockers), but also the problem was that I was suddenly taking a whole host of medications that my body wasn't used to. I managed to stop the beta-blockers and substituted candersartan for the ramipril. I'd rather not take anything, but accept that I'll probably be on some of them for life.

It really is worthwhile keeping at it with your doctor until you get drugs that are acceptable for your quality of life. As others have said on this site, Metformin can be a culprit, but it may also be due to the combination with other drugs. My GP had me stop various drugs for a short while to determine if thigs improved. It took a long time, but I'm much happier now. I hope that your husband gets things sorted soon - I know how dreadfully debilitating constant problems like this can be - once in a while then they're trivial, but day after day they're very hard to live with. Dear Laura,

I cannot add to the advice given in previous posts on this thread. However, Januvia is the first of a new class of blood glucose lowering drugs for people with type 2 diabetes. The active ingredient sitagliptin, which is a type of medicine called a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, so he probably is not on sitagliptin for cholesterol.

As he has been on the metformin for a year now I didn't think it could be them. We have read as much information as we could get on all the drugs he is on and all mention GI problems but the GP hadn't heard of these particular symptoms - the vile smelly burps in particular seem to confuse him.
OH is thinking of stopping each drug for a couple of weeks at a time to see if it helps.
 
Good luck and peservere. It takes a while for some doctors to get their acts together, but it is worth it in the end.

Things do improve and as long as things are well contorlled treats and nice things are allowed. DOn't let the diabetes rule your lives let your lives rule the diabetes.

Dear mustbemad,

Your husband's idea of stopping each drug for two weeks sounds viable. However, please ensure your GP is "in the loop" because there can be unexpected problems if you go "cold turkey".
