Update on Daughter's Eye

GP had referred Zoe back to opthalmology due to her eye hurting more and more - now complaining on a daily basis - and the fact the problem is showing up in most photographs. The consultant we saw this time was really helpful and agreed that there must be something wrong so she needs further testing. Has definitely ruled out retinoblastoma 🙂 and is looking at other causes - thinking it could be some kind of squint which would explain the photos as her eye would be out of line, and the eye would be aching a lot. We have been given an urgent referral to see the consultant optician on Friday - I have to put her dilation drops in 1/2 hr before appointment though, hoping I get them in ok! At least at last someone has listened and given us a possibility, rather than just saying they don't know what it is and discharging her.

Newbs thats good news that as last someone is sitting up and telling you what you need to hear for a change...I hope the following tests do find a cause as it cant be nice for your little girl or yourself x

Good to hear you have been listened to, best of luck friday, let us know how your little one gets on.
I find the best way for putting in drops on a child is to get them to close their eyes, you are then in control with your fingertips on pulling open the lid to get them in (as they invariably blink as soon as you are anywhere near with the drops), it's a skill ! 🙂

Having had to have an eye operation (as a result of a fall) when I was three and a half I can understand your worries. At least someone has given you the chance to find out if the "squint" idea is what's wrong and has hopefully made you less worried about the thing you were dreading most. Thank you, everyone. It does feel better having had someone listen at last to what I am saying and agree that there is something wrong and give a suggestion to what. It has been so frustrating to keep being told there is nothing wrong when clearly there is. Hoping obviously it is something that can be helped and treated quite easily but feel that we are at least getting somewhere. Will update you tomorrow - although Zoe is saying they are not looking at her eyes any more so should be interesting! 🙂

Today's appointment went badly - Zoe went into total meltdown and wouldn't let the consultant anywhere near her . I tried to calm her dow and she brought her head up and split my lip open too. The consultant caught a very quick glimpse and said that she is almost certain she is long-sighted in her bad eye and will need glasses but couldn't get any further than that. We have been re-booked in at a different clinic 14 miles away so that it is a different environment as she has been examined 4 times at this clinic now and knowing where she is going each time is not good! Hopefully she'll forget about it all by April and be ok in a different place.

O sorry that you didn't get any further today -April seems a long time to wait

My daughter started to wear glasses age 4 as her vision very different in one eye to the other - all the pictures I have of her aged 3 her head is turned to one side. She used to ( still does) hate the eye drops as she is also photophobic (they say) and having her pupils dilated for do long was (is) unconfortable. They did manange to correct the 'head turning' by age 6 so she stopped the glasses.

I hope your daughter has forgotten by the next appointment, but I would try and prepare her and get her to realise they need to look to make her better.

Hope it works out for you - have they said what to do about the pain in the meantime?

No, they haven't said what to do for the pain while we wait. She doesn't watch much tv anyway and obviously can't read so not sure there is much we can do to stop her eye aching.
