This morning I met with my DSN and she is as confused by my blood sugars as me. She has given me an Accu-chek Aviva Expert meter, which she hopes will help with my control - I have to go to have it set-up and have a little training on using it tomorrow morning. Has anyone else got one of these meters?

She also said that using this meter and inputting all the info required is a step in the right direction towards a pump and she thinks that is where I am headed. I would get an Accu-chek pump if pumping is the way I go.

Hope the meter helps with things newbs! Quite a few here have them, I believe, with a couple progressing to pumps - good luck! 🙂

I really liked my Expert meter. Though it does take a little fiddling and tweaking to get the settings 'right' so that you get fairly consistently good advice. (these may be slighty different numbers/targets/correction factors etc from what you use in your own head to achieve the same effects)

The great thing is tha having a device to take the methematical acrobatics out of the process means that once you have got it basically set up OK, you can make very small adjustments as your D varies throughout the year (as it inevitably does!)

I was given an Expert meter prior to starting on a pump. I found it very good and it was easier to keep control. It certainly helped me get ready for my pump. Good luck with it - I'm sure you'll find it helps you. 🙂

Sounding positive from your responses, and I've read the large book that comes with the meter, in preparation for the set-up tomorrow. I've even talked my gp in to adding the strips to my repeat prescription! :D

Get another Roche meter (eg the Nano) as a spare Newbs, then you will always have strips should the Expert go berserk - I had an electronic error on the first one I had and I'd have been in deep doo doo without a spare having run out of strips for the previous meter.

The Nano's a very ordinary sort of meter but Hey! - we've all been doing mental arithmetic for yonks before this anyway so we can do it again for a couple of days till Roche or our DSN get a new one to us.

The biggy with the expert is it calculates Insulin on Board and takes that into account as well as any correction dose of insulin and the insulin dose for the carbs.

Oh - and have you got a half-unit insulin pen? cos that will help you get more precise doses.

I will get a back-up, I like to have a couple of meters around, just in case. I do have a half-unit pen and have set the meter up in 0.5 increments.

I'm all set-up and running now and am quite impressed so far at how much this little meter can do. 🙂

I know! LOL

I do hope you'll see an improvement Newbs.
