Hi Bev

The consultant didn't do any other tests which I did find a little surprising, but I guess he based it on my symptoms. The gastric emptying studying indicated that I had severe gastroparesis so I guess mine was easier to identify.

Hi Amanda,

I think I would ask for a caeliac test - not just a blood test though as you need a biopsy for a 'true' result. I dont mean to upset you or give you something else to worry about - its just that on CWD we read a lot about children with caeliac and your symptoms do seem to fit. It would be best to have it ruled out as this could be complicating things for you and it sounds as if you do suffer quite a bit. If it turns out that you are caeliac-free then great - it just worries me that you havent been tested.🙂Bev

p.s. I read another link where someone was diagnosed with the same as you but persisted and eventually was found to have caeliac - the delay in stomach emptying can be a symptom of caeliac too.

Hi Bev

Thanks very much for this suggestion. When I see a diabetic specialist I will ask them. I won't ask the GP because they seem to get annoyed with all of the blood tests that I've had during the last year because of the fatigue.........but of course the fatigue could be because of coeliac Amanda x

I was supposed to see my consultant this month but unfortunately he has left the hospital so all patients are seeing one diabetic consultant now! Hopefully I will get an appointment to see her in November and will ask her about the gastroparesis and tests that could be done then.

Personally, I had coeliac ruled out a couple of years ago but was tested for it as it was thought I had IBD.

Hi Amanda, hope things are ok with you x Just read the posts and I had a second endoscopy on Thursday with a biopsy because they didn't do the biopsy the first time for possible Coeliac disease. The blood tests I had in the springtime showed the first part as negative and the second part as high, positive. Which is a indication of Coeliac disease. I thought at first,it was an ulcer and I mentioned Gastrparesis, but dr seemed to rule both out! I have lost about 8 kilos,it has been like this for months, slow weight loss, then stable for 3/4 weeks then another drop.

The vomiting stopped, months ago, I still get nauseaand that is severe at times, I am on Omeprazole Gastro resistant tablets and continuing to have upper adominal pain, a gripping cripeing pain, sometimes mild, other times more severe. I had a horrible time on a train in August, when we came back from London, I tested my BS, 5.6 🙂 started to read my book, then I started to feel a bit unwell, it got worse and worse, feeling extremly sick, sweating, clammy, all I wanted to do was to collapse on the floor of the train, I couldn't even get up to go to the toilets because I felt so bad, I was writhing about and even had my head and body leant forward on the top of my duffle bag on my lap, it was awful and my daughter told me afterwards that people on the train were looking at me, but they were the least of my worries. I managed to walk home with help from my daughter ,she made me tea but all I wanted to do was to sleep and we had such a lovely time in London. Dont know what it was, told my doctor, but still unexplained. A bit of a long post there, apologies for that.
If my biopsy comes back as negative, then, not sure what is happening?

With best wishes

Catwoman, have you tried cutting out wheat (gluten) on the basis it could be coeliac?

Hello I couldn't stop gluten because of the endoscopys. I didn't know when I was going to have the first endoscopy, it took ages, so then my doctor got in touch with the consultant and I five days notice. As I am used to the medical problems, I have just kept eating my normal foods, but if test comes back negative, then I will change my diet to eliminate certain foods, its the weight loss that was causing concern. Best wishes

Hi trophywench,

In order to get a 'true' result one should keep eating normal food. If you remove the trigger then healing can start and possibly give a false negative. Catwoman is quite right to keep eating normally in order to get a 'true' result.🙂

However, if the result does come back as negative it might be a good idea to start trying GF foods to see if symptoms reduce - not certain why but from the little research I have done it seems that it reduces attacks of gastroparesis.🙂

Hi Catwoman,

I dont know whether you saw the recent statement about drugs such as Omprazole - but it was clear that they can do more damage than good - and can actually create the very symptoms that they are supposed to be healing! I was on a similar drug for 'acid reflux' and decided to stop taking it - and my symptoms have completely disappeared - I only get the odd pain and that is when I have either eaten too much or had foods that I dont normally have - it could be the fat content not sure.🙂I am not saying that you should stop taking them at all - but do ask your team what their thoughts are.🙂Bev

Hi Bev thanks for the information regarding Omeprazole,I didn't know about that! I will read it more throughly later.
Throphywench, in order to have a correct diagnosis of the Coeliac biopsy, gluetn must still be eaten, its in the fact sheet from the DTC regarding the endoscpoy with a biopsy. If gluten is stopped as bev said, it could come back as a false result.
My first endoscopy in August gave the diagnosis of gastritis and dudeumistis and this second one showed on the report :- The procedure was completed successfully. OESOPHAGUS. Hiatus hernia: sliding at (a)(the bottomof the Oesophagus) which is now Heartburn, even though I dont seem to have the symptoms ( burning in the chest) of heartburn. The gut is very complicated with many medical conditions which do have similar symptoms. Best wishes

My Mum had a hiatus hernia and used to have some kind of milky, minty-tasting medicine to take to settle her stomach. I hope they can get to the bottom of things (so to speak!) and you can get a good treatment that works for you. I was on omeprazole when I was first diagnosed but it did nothing for me so I stopped it (with GP's agreement) - didn't notice any difference after stopping it!

Hi Sheena

I'm so sorry to hear that you are having such an awful time. What you are going through sounds horrible. I hope that these tests do show what is wrong so that you can do what you need to do to have good health again. Thinking of you and hoping that things improve soon Amanda x

I have had stomach problems from age 15 until (oddly) after diagnosis with D and a change in diet, but meantime I have had many medications and endoscopies etc. Firstly regarding gastroparesis may I recommend you check out http://www.gastroparesis.org.uk/index.html A site which a fellow diabetes sufferer started because of her problems with gastroparesis and a wonderfully helpful place.
Anyone troubled with ulcers should enquire from their GP about the antibiotics for Helicobacter Pyelorii - these changed my life! I also had my gall bladder removed which was a huge op back in 1985 but is a minor keyhole surgery op now.
After over 30 years of pain and sickness I am now completely able to eat anything at all!

Sorry, just re-read my comments. What I meant to say is that Gall bladder problems, ulcers and hiatus hernias can all share the same bloating/nausea and griping pain symptoms that have been described. You need to ensure the diagnosis is correct and the right treatment applied. Many Drs seemingly haven't heard of the bacteria which cause ulcers and it's such an easy cure.

Some interesting research underway, let's hope it bears fruit 🙂

Study suggests home-based, non-invasive therapy is effective in treating gastroparesis symptoms

Diabetic patients who suffer from a common complication of diabetes called gastroparesis may find that chronic electrical stimulation (ES) at specific acupuncture points could relieve gastroparesis symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, early satiety, abdominal fullness, upper abdominal pain and bloating, according to study results unveiled today at the American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) 77th Annual Scientific meeting in Las Vegas.

The study, "Chronic Electrical Stimulation at Acupuncture Points Improves Dyspeptic Symptoms," used a watch-sized digital microstimulator that was specially developed for this project to assess the effects of ongoing electrical stimulation at acupuncture points on gastroparesis symptoms in diabetic patients with refractory gastroparesis.
