Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I know this is an autoimmune condition that can be linked to diabetes , i just wondered how many people on the forum have this , i got an underactive thyroid after pregnancy and im on 125mcgs of thyroxine and have all the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism .

I am underactive though not diabetic, my daughter is T1, there is a lot of auto immune deficiencies on both mine and hubby's family - over active thyroid, rheumatoid arthritis. Think this has probably pre-disposed Millie.

Its ture about families my niece is t1 diabetic and has coeliacs as well which is another autoimmune condition

My Dad has psoriasis which is autoimmune. No hypothyroidism that I know of though.

Underactive for me as well + Mum. Diabetes on my Fathers side of the family and all over active on that side of the family.

I've been coming here for almost three years now and so far i'm the only person who's admitted to having an OVERactive thyroid. I think there's an established link between underactive thyroids and diabetes but i don't know about overactive ones. It's all endocrine innit? I've got an unsubstantiated theory that the diabetes came along and messed up my metabolism making my thyroid go ballistic. Now the diabetes has settled down a bit my thyroid has stopped going bananas, i think, i never did have many symptoms i could indentify, but my GP assured me it was a problem, and i've never quite forgiven him for it😱
It's a bit unfair on the poor man, it's not his fault our relationship started with "by the way you've got diabetes and an overactive thyroid".

I have an underactive thyroid, it runs in our family (mum's side). So I won't be surprised if Carol and/or Fiona will get it at some point in the future.:(

Underactive here.

On diabetes-support. org.uk (extra space deliberate LOL) we have got several with over-active too. Will be most interesting seeing what tomorrows blood test result says, bearing in mind how cold I am right now and my hands have been for the last month .....)

i have underactive thyroid currently on 200mg (doc has never seen anyone being prescribed this high a dose, so would be interested to know what levels you guys are taking!) and my mum was overactive - so not sure if the two would be linked or not as she did not have diabetes!

my last level on my blood test was 82 (i believe it should be between 4 & 7) so will wait and see if i need more...!

I'm on 100mcg tablets, but an aquaintance of mine told me that her dad was on 200mcg too. And I have a friend who's on 125mcg.

I didn't know the result should be between 4 & 7 (just like the glucose) and I have no idea what my level was before starting on the tablets or after 😱

Apart from Carol there's no diabetes in our family at all, so underactive thyroid isn't linked to diabetes here (yet)

TSH bloods should be between 0.2 and 4, is this the blood test you mean ? they do others for thyroid as well. On diagnosis my TSH was 63, that was 7 months ago, my latest was 4.9 so just borderline now and on 125mcg levothyroxine.

Does everybody with underactive have trouble loosing weight :(

I lost half the weight once I started treatment then plateaued as my appetite came back, activity levels not quite yet back to normal, lost a lot of muscle/strength so been bit of a catch 22 situation, very slowly chipping away at last 3/4 stone, back in the garden and allotment, need to get back walking! (hate the gym/classes)

I have an underactive thyroid, on 150mg Thyroxine a day and am slightly UNDER weight, have never been able to put much on partly due to the fact that I tend to walk or cycle every where.

I was surprised to discover that I had underactive thyroid as I didn't gain any weight, just felt so incredible tired, I still do though :(
