Sadly in many aspects of life people are extremely ignorant. My personal favourite as my wifes jewish, when I say this to be asked is she really jewish?
@PhoebeC I had somebody ask me what my Libre patch was before and I did the same, explained I was diabetic and it checks my blood sugar levels using and app, then the guy asked if I was on an app... The first and only time diabetes has been used as a pick up line I was in a relationship at the time, the answer was no!
Also, somebody asked if my Diabetes was Type A before and they explained it as though it was Type One so I said 'I think you mean Type One', I think I was right in saying that?
When i worked in a primary school, the kids (4-7yrs) asked what it was on my arm. I just said that something inside my body didn't work any more and the sensor would send an alarm to my phone to tell me if i needed to check or have some "medicine". They got used to my alarm going off and would sometimes say "miss, do you need your medicine?". They got so used to the alarm whenever it went off that they didn't bat an eyelid when it went off while OFSTED was in! They just carried on and took no notice, bless them!
When I was diagnosed in 1995 I don’t remember any references to Type 1 or 2 - it was IDD (Insulin Dependent Diabetes or NIDD (Non etc etc) Which was pretty nonsensical for a Type 2 on insulin.
That reminds me. I was diagnosed in 94, age 22. At the time there was still compulsory military service in Spain, but I had a deferment because of being at university.
Having diabetes meant I had to apply for a medical discharge. As part of my application I included a letter from my consultant saying that I had been diagnosed with IDDM. A few days later I get a call from the recruitment centre asking why I asked for a medical discharge due to diabetes, when the doctors letter said nothing about diabetes . I had to get the consultant to write a new letter spelling out IDDM.
