Type 2
I have been diagnosed as type 2, but I've just read about type 3c.

As a child, I fell off a pushbike and spent 100 days in hospital with severe acute pancreatitis caused by the trauma sustained. I don't appear to have any of the risk factors associated with type 2 so i'm wondering whether I could be a misdiagnosed type 3c?

The metformin I've been given and diet changes does seem to be working so maybe I'm just over thinking things.

Are the symptoms and treatments different for type 3c?

I thought Type 3c meant your pancreas had been removed completely. Is that right @eggyg and all other 3c experts?

It’s damage or illness so as @grovesy says pancreatitis can cause it too. You may not always need insulin if that’s the case but if your pancreas is whipped out you will do. I had two thirds removed 13 years ago but have only been using insulin for 6 years. It’s amazing really.

If you’ve only had the one attack of acute pancreatitis you’re probably not Type 3c. It would generally be long term chronic pancreatitis. Every attack will leave scarring which irreversibly damages the pancreas. To answer the question about symptoms, they’re the same as any type but not as sudden as Type 1. The treatment for Type 3c varies. I had two thirds of my pancreas removed due to a tumour in 2007. Didn’t become diabetic until 2010 and started on insulin 2014. If you’re concerned at all do speak to your team.

Fair comment, @eggyg, but 100 days in hospital sounds like considerable pancreatic damage, which would leave considerable scarring. Who knows what has been happening since with regard to alcohol or smoking, but further damage can be pain free. After all, I've never had acute pancreatitis, or any pancreatic pain, but I have a pancreas well rotted and calcified by chronic pancreatitis (probably auto immune). I suspect Mark's pancreas is on its last legs, but an ultrasound scan of the pancreas would answer that question.

No rush, if the metformin is working.
