I seem to hear contradictory messages about alcohol.

From the point of view of the diabetes it would seem that having a drink is not a problem as regards to my blood sugar, however I have heard that people without a pancreas should avoid alcohol because of digestive issues. Which is true.

If you have had a total removal of the pancreas, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t have a drink.

The only caution is in folk who have had a partial pancreas removal, because even in normal people alcohol is toxic for the pancreas. That’s why heavy drinkers can get acute pancreatitis, which has a 25% mortality rate. Some people can get pancreatic pain after partial removal if they drink alcohol, but that isn’t everyone.

The important thing to say is try it and see, you will come to no harm.

Anyway, alcohol is not digested. It’s absorbed directly into the bloodstream, so digestive problems don’t come into it. If it were digested, it wouldn’t work:confused:

I have had a partial pancreatectomy. Surgeon informs me only 10% left.
I don’t drink alcohol, well can’t because of cirrhosis of the liver and previous hepatitisC infection.
As long as your liver is ok, Like Mikey B says no reason you cannot treat yourself to a drink as many other diabetics do.
As long as you don’t over do and figure out your insulin and medication accordingly.
