Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I had a telephone call from Dr. to advise me that my blood glucose test came back very high 19 and when I asked what would I have to do next, she replied not to eat sugar......after umpteen phone calls to Doctor's surgery, I found they did in fact have a diabetes nurse. I was diagnosed three weeks ago and I cannot see the nurse until 9th November and I am walking about with untreated diabetes - I presume it is type 2 as I am 65 years old and overweight. I am happy to say I have already lost 2 stone (to-date) and I am walking each and every day for 30 - 60 minutes and sometimes swimming. I have cut out salt, sugar and fat.

Well done on the weight loss and lifestyle changes, Gail.🙂 Unfortunately, your story seems to be really common...come back in a month...it makes my blood boil. 😡 Luckily, this forum is full of friendly, knowledgeable people - there are some books and links that Northener recommends for Type 2 newbies - I'm sure he'll be along soon to help you. 😛

Hi Gail, welcome to the group....

I'm afraid that it's not as simple as cutting sugar, we are affected by all carbohydrates😱

Great place to start is to cut or reduce carb sources like Bread, Pasta, Rice, Cereals & starchy vegetables, replacing them with green leafy vegetables

Hi Gail ...welcome to the forum. You'll find lots of friendly people here who are willing to offer very good advice, most of which has been gained through personal experience of the same conditions with their diabetes as yours.
As Martin has said, it's not just about cutting out sugar, it's also about making changes to your lifestyle that will help you manage your diabetes better. He's correct when he says that we have to watch our intake of Carbohydrates but this doesn't meant not having them at all, just eat less of them than you may have been used to. Try to limit the bread that you eat but when you do have a slice, there's nothing wrong with putting some butter on it. Cutting down Salt is always a good idea - diabetes or not, there's usually enough in the foods we eat anyway! Pasta, Rice, Potatoes whichever way they're cooked are all full of starchy carbs so you'll need to cut down a lot on those too. Watch out for fruit Juice as well, it might sound healthy but it's not as good for us Diabetics as, say, eating an Orange is.

Well done on the weight loss, that's excellent! Keep it going and it will do nothing but help you control your diabetes. I know it's tough because I'm packing a lot more Timber than I should but you seem to have taken to it well. Good for you! 🙂

Hi Gail...what a shock for you...and no real advice from the doctor...so disappointing...but I fear not uncommon...I was diagnosed mid July...just given tablets and recommended a book on carbs & calories...so you have no idea yet whether you are type 1 or 2?...I would ring the surgery and ask them to give you an urgent appointment...19 is high...my BG was 17.4 at diagnosis...and they told me (phone call advice as my GP was away)... type 2 and given a prescription immediately...with an appointment to see my own GP four days later....although he didn't give me much advice (said book & Metformin)...I would ring them and get an urgent appointment...if not given one speak to the practice manager...well done on the weight loss and adjusting your diet...and the exercise...however you should not be left on your own to deal with this until the 9th of November...if you are type 2...Type 2 Diabetes The First Year by Gretchen Becker is fantastic...will tell what you need to know...answered a lot of questions for me...and this forum has taught me so much...you've come to the right place.

Welcome to the forum Gail.

I think everyone has covered things quite nicely so far.

You seem to be on the ball as well and have already made changes. I think that is the best way to be. Don't wait for the medical types, necessarily!

Andy 🙂

Hello and welcome from a T2

Welcome to the forum Gail. There are wonderful knowledgeable people on this forum who have helped me so much. Only thing I would add to what has already been said is don't beat yourself up if things don't go to plan, just keep up the good work you have already started. Small steps are best. You will probably be offered medication. Think about what you want to do. I decided to try diet and exercise to control my diabetes and it has worked for me. Unfortunately we are not all the same so you might want to try testing your blood to keep an eye on how you are doing. (Medics probably won't encourage this.) Ask lots of questions and good luck with it. Your weight loss is impressive, well done 🙂

Many thanks for all your kind words of encouragement and advice. I am so glad I have joined this forum

Hi Gail, welcome from me too. Your treatment so far sounds familiar and although avoid sugar is a good start, what they won't tell you is to avoid carbs as well. Sugar is a carbohydrate and carbs convert to sugar in the body, basically to supply energy for the muscles to work. Well done on the weight loss, that discipline will help you avoid carbs as well. As happydog mentioned you'll need a meter, again, despite what ever medical advice you receive. The NHS seem to think doing an HbA1c every six months or a year is enough, it isn't. Walking is excellent exercise and any exercise will help bring down your BG. It will be interesting to hear what nursey say when you see her, especially if you show her the results of your efforts. You might be surprised how different current medical advice is compared to what most people on the forum do to produce good BG control. All the best.

And your Gp surgery is shocking, need to change it, complain, it took 2 weeks for me to see GP, Diabetic Nurse etc and started Metformin yesterday x
