Morning everyone,
I'm new to the forum so a little background for you. I've just gone past my 11yr anniversary of being diagnosed with T2. I was 26 at the time and they were not entirely sure if I was T1 or T2 with being diagnosed so young so they've continued to treat me as T2. Most of these years I have buried my head in the sand and not managed the condition very well at all. I started off on Metformin which didn't agree with me at all was changed to Glucophage which was the same, then to novomix insulin injections which was too rigid for my lifestyle then eventually put on lantus and humalog which is what I've been on ever since. I find it hard to lose weight even though me and my partner go to the gym 3 times a week and I cook all our food from scratch. Doctors believe I have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) this was found last year when I was having abnormal periods or none at all and found 2 cysts on my right ovary. Me and my partner are now struggling to conceive due to not ovulating each month, are there any other ladies on here that also have PCOS? did you change from insulin back to metformin as that is the preferred medication to give for PCOS? Sorry for the long rant but I feel like i'm in a never ending vicious circle that I cannot break. My doctors are quite patronising and think it's all very black and white that it's so easy to lose the weight. If anyone has any experience or advice they would like to share that might be of help it would be much appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Hi Scoobie, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the problems you have been having. What are your blood sugars like generally - do you know your HbA1c? I'm not convinced that going back to metformin as opposed to insulin would be a good idea, as the likelihood is that your blood sugar control would suffer adversely - something you would not want if you are hoping for a child as they want really good control during pregnancy. What is your diet like? Many people have found that the main culprit is actually the amount of carbohydrate consumed which makes weight loss difficult when using insulin. Do you have much weight to lose? Have you ever followed a testing regime to try and discover what foods you tolerate well and what things you should reduce or exclude from your diet? Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand what I mean by this. It may be that you will be able to reduce your insulin doses by modifying your diet and bringing your blood sugar levels under good control. This, combined with your exercise regime, may help with the weight loss 🙂

We do have other members with PCOS, hopefully they will be along to help - I believe it's quite common in association with Type 2.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help! 🙂

Hi thank you for taking the time to reply. Generally my sugars run quite high and i'm not great at taking my meds when I should (head in sand again!).
Everything seems so interlinked but until I lose more weight (another stone and half before gyne will do further fertility stuff) then I'm no further forward. Just been put on pill for 3 months to regulate periods but that hasn't helped with weight loss either. The main carbohydrate I eat is bread but it's so damn versatile! I'm back at the doctors on Weds as he wants to see me after doing the 3 cycles on the pill so hopefully he might have another plan we can look at. Times running out for us really to have a baby as i'm 38 this year and said I would never go into my 40's trying for a baby. Hey ho everything happens for a reason I guess.

Do have a look at the link about testing that I suggested Scoobie, it can really help to spot 'easy wins' to help with your blood sugars. I'd also recommend starting a food diary, recording the amount of carbs in everything you eat and drink. This might sound tedious, but it can be very helpful, and often revealing about things we hadn't really realised we were eating. Given the amount of work you are willing to put in to other areas in your hopes for a baby, this is something that can really show practical benefits. If you have any questions, just ask - you'll get lots of support from other people who are also tackling the same difficulties, and there are lots of great success stories too that will hopefully encourage you 🙂 Do keep posting so we can help support you in your efforts, you don't have to do it alone! 🙂

Thank you I will take a look at the link and see if it had anything that can help.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. My dr has now put me on orislat to see if it helps with the weight loss, have 4wks to see if any change and go back to dr to decide if they'll extend the prescription.

Hi and welcome to forum.

Hi Scoobie, sounds very stressful which doesn't help things, I'm a big advocate of the food diary and testing as Northie suggested. So good to see in black and white what you eat and how it affects you. I record all my bg tests on a spreadsheet and I can see how certain foods react on me, then change or continue, as per the result. I use "My Fitness Pal" to record and its great once you've got your main foods in you just keep copying them, Wish you all the luck with your journey Al

Hi and welcome to the forum. It is very overwhelming and blooming terrifying!

Careful with eating fatty foods with the Orlistat- it has some very violent gastric side effects!😱🙄

Hello Scoobie, I've read your post and sympathise with you. I have been unable to lose weight, my son who is quite knowledgeable on the subject told me my metabolism was shot, he told me to eat dark green vegetables like spinach and broccoli with every meal if I could, I had baby spinach omelettes and broccoli soup, obviously With other foods as well, In 4 weeks I have followed a high fat diet and I have lost a stone in weight, and my blood sugars have gone from 19.9 to 8.3.
