Hi Griff and welcome

How long have you been living with the big D? Are you on any medication? Do you know your most recent HbA1c reading?
Many of us here on the forum find following a low carb higher fat way of eating a really effective way of managing our diabetes. Have you tried making dietary changes? Takes a bit of getting your head around at first but works really effectively once you get used to it and is quite an enjoyable way to eat..... Hard to feel badly done to when you start the day on a coffee made with real cream and end it with a chunk of nice cheese and a glass of red wine 😉

Hi all. newbie to site not to diabetes unfortunately lol
Hi all I've been a t2 diabetic for nearly 20 years now, I've controlled it mostly by not eating sweets, no suger in.my tea or coffee and hardly drinking alcohol I've also found by working as hard as I have it's helped my weight is 12st and I'm 5ft 10.
But along came covid 19 and guess who caught thay you guessed correctly. I've been laid off so not working and I've decided to have a go at triathalon I've been cycling running and swimming but looking at all the training manuals they are saying people should be having lots of carbs to fuel the training but won't that effect my sugar reading, I've had my yearly blood test last week and I've had to have another today, when queried the nurse told me my and I quote my kidneys are out. Anyway test will come back Friday my self test is anywhere between 7.8 8.8 sorry for going on thanks

Sorry - but all the time you have been eating starchy foods 'for energy' you have been ramping up your blood glucose levels as they are a carbohydrate, just like sugars, and they are just as damaging.
I can only suggest that you re-evaluate your intake of all carbohydrates, and do whatever you can to reduce your blood glucose levels. It might come as a bit of a shock to your metabolism, but if you swap to protein and fats - the essential foodgroups, your body will adapt to using the fats for fuel.

Sorry to hear about your being laid off, and your brush with Covid19 @Griff1

Well done for managing your diabetes over the last 20 years - quite an achievement!

Your triathlon training sounds demanding, but fun too. A challenge like that is sometimes a great motivator.

As to ‘carb loading’ I’m not sure that’s a brilliant tactic for athletes with diabetes, because of the complexities of absorbing carbs. You may find that increased muscle mass and activity gove you a bit more license carb-wise, but I’m not sure stacking up the carbs would help you in the same way it might a non-D.

Keen marathon runner and ex-admin @Northerner often used to recommend the Diabetic Athlete’s Handbook for a good overview of sports, activities and the physical/metabolic processes involved.

Thanks everyone I will be checking up about the book suggestion diabetic athletes handbook, it sounds like the very thing I'm after. I've tried getting info on diabetes and training but have not got far, it seems like media thinks if you're diabetic your overweight and abuse yourself. No real info for someone who wants train for a sport. So thanks for the heads up about the book. Top man. Oh one last question should I still eat bananas or are they bad for us, the Web contradicts it self about this constantly some say good some say no good.

Bananas bad.

Well - what does eating a banana do to your BG? and that's the question you should be answering for virtually everything you eat, and which informs your choice for what you eat in future.

Try this testing regime

A banana has about 25gm of carbs so about equal to my evening meal with dessert, but probably eaten faster and absorbed faster too.
