Hi been type 2 dm for 5 years diet controlled, since October HBA1C was 86 commenced metformin and unable to tolerate moved to slow release no better now on glucophage but still bad side effects including now vomiting HBA1C down to 59 last week ,
Are there any other drugs without these horrid side effects.

I am on Glucophage which is slow release metformin. I too have terrible trouble with them. Was hoping this would go when i cut down to 1000mg instead of the usual 2000mg i was on. It has a little but still have occasional troubles. I was never offered an alternative despite my problems so can't tell you what else is out there but sure some members will be able to tell you. Good luck.

There are many other Drugs for Type2, Metformin is just the first line of treatment.

Hi will need to check with my gp as cannot function normally will let you know what he advises.

Hi
With a current HbA1c of just 59 there is every chance that you could come off medication and control your diabetes and reduce your HbA1c further by diet and exercise if you haven't already taken action in those areas or have room to improve those areas.
Many people believe that diabetes is all about cutting back on sugar, but all carbs get broken down by the body into glucose and there are the equivalent of 3 teaspns of sugar in a medium slice of wholemeal bread, so a sandwich with 2 slices of bread can soon add up to a lot of glucose in your blood stream. Same with breakfast cereals and potatoes and rice and pasta etc. Cutting down on these items too, as well as the sugar, cakes and biscuits can have a huge impact on your Blood Glucose levels. Many of us find that once we get used to this low carb way of eating it is actually very enjoyable and we don't miss those things because we eat other lovely foods instead. Maybe discuss a low carb diet option with your GP as an alternative to medication or there are other options like a short term very calorie restricted diet, like the Newcastle or Fast 800 diet to try to push your diabetes into remission through weight loss. There is an option for this to be prescribed in some cases as it involves meal replacement products to restrict the calorie intake.

Medication is only one aspect of Diabetes management and usually not the most effective. Changing your diet will usually have the most significant impact, but regular daily exercise like a brisk walk will also help.

Sorry to hear how difficult you have been finding Metformin and Glucophage @wendyhoggart - sounds very unpleasant for you.

Many members find the side effects of metformin settle down after a few weeks, but we have had several who could never get on with it, so you aren’t alone.

What food strategies did you find helped when you were on diet & exercise? It’s not uncommon for reactions to foods to change over the years with diabetes, so it may help to try some slight tweaks to your menu to go alongside whichever meds end up suiting you?
