I have been a Type 2 diabetes for 20 years and on metformin and glicsise. About 2 months ago i started experiencing " jelly Belly" and weakness from the waist down. I have slight numbness with both my feet and the buttocks . I struggle with co-ordination and sometimes i experience dizzy spells. My toes and fingers occasionally are numb and flop , it takes a while to return to normality. Please can anyone advise what this could be as i am anxious

What does the doctor say it is?

Not familiar with either glicsise or what you term jelly belly; do you mean Gliclazide?

I do not have a good doctor , he is not understanding , so i rather not ask him

Well the thing is, it may be nerve damage caused by diabetes but nobody on a forum can diagnose you anyway, or it may be something else that's causing it. If you could explain what you mean by jelly belly and also confirm what the second drug is, that could be helpful.

Jelly belly is when the stomach feels like excess lose skin. It kinda has a mind of its own. Kinda like my legs and toes. I am not overweight by any means , but the sensation is the same. The second medication i am on is Gliclazide. If it is the nerve damage does this indicate something more serious? I hear horror stories of amplitaton. I try to manage my medications over the years and have done pretty good, which makes it confusing as to what this is happening or is it not avoidable?

Have you taken your bloods when you have the dizzzy spells as Gliclazide can cause hypos. You do really need to see a Dr about your struggle with coordintation.

@Sandra Harris I echo the above advice to see a doctor. This might not even be connected to your diabetes eg you mentioned buttock numbness which could be a sign of something like sciatica. The fact you mentioned weakness from the waist down needs further investigation if only to rule things out.

If you don’t get on with your doctor, could you ask to see a different doctor at the Practice?

I don’t understand the ‘jelly belly’ thing either but testing your blood sugar whenever you feel funny is definitely a good idea.

I hope you get things sorted out.

Can I reinforce the comments made by others? It is important that you find a way of getting examined by a doctor, it is the only way of sorting out what is going on.

You may not warm to your doctor but it’s important you get medical advice.
If you’re at a practice with multiple doc’s then ask to see someone else perhaps. Or plan to go to the NHS website and find an alternative surgery to register with but do that after you’ve seen your current GP.
At a push you can go and speak to a pharmacist but if they suggest you go to your GP follow that advice.

sounds like claudication and neuropathy, not really something that a forum can help with ,other than speculate.
Best is to get tested by qualified professionals.
The diabetic nurse is sometimes a better place to start if the doctor is hard to get hold of.

It sounds to me as if you have a neurological condition. You need to write down everything that is going on and see/talk to a GP. I hope you get some answers soon.

Having been just diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency I have been reading up on it. Some of the symptoms are tingling and numbness in the hand and feet, muscle weakness, and confusion. And it can be caused by having taken Metformin for a long time. So that seems a possibility.

If you would rather not speak to you doctor, then you will need to find another one. Even if we could accurately diagnose you through posts of a forum (despite very few, if any, of us being medically trained or licensed) then you would still need to see a doctor for prescriptions or access to other treatments. So all we would do is delay the inevitable.

Maybe, though, you could speak to a pharmacist first if that will make you feel more comfortable. Whilst they may not be able to help you directly, they could rule things out and make suggestions for what it may be in referring you to see a doctor. That way, when you see your doctor the pharmacists's assessment may make you feel more confident

But what you are describing is a medical problem and it needs medical attention. If it is B12 deficiency then it can be easily treated with B12 shots to build it back up. Though if left untreated it can cause permanent neurological damage, so is not something you want to ignore or self medicate with weaker over-the-counter vitamins.

Thank you everyone that has been so helpful in assisting me with my current condition. I will be pro-active in finding another doctor . Thanks again🙂

Hope you get some answers @Sandra Harris

Let us know how you get on.
